Passed 02/28/2024

Obituary For Wilbert Henry Brooks, Jr.

Wilbert H. Brooks, Jr., of Richmond, passed away Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at Henrico Doctors' Hospital after a brief illness. He was born on June 6, 1940, in Richmond, Virginia, to the late Wilbert Henry Brooks, Sr. and Celestine Boone Brooks. Wilbert was preceded in death by his sister, Willie Ruth Brooks Patterson (Charles).

Wilbert's spiritual journey began at an early age when he accepted Christ and was baptized at Zion Baptist Church. He attended Blackwell Primary and Secondary Schools before graduating from Armstrong High School in 1959. He continued his education at Virginia State College (now Virginia State University), where he obtained both his bachelor's and master's degrees. During his time at Virginia State, Wilbert was not only a dedicated student but also a passionate athlete. He excelled in wrestling and was the Captain of the championship team. In recognition of his achievements, he was later inducted into the VSU Hall of Fame for wrestling. Wilbert was also actively involved in civil rights and activism during his college years. He played a significant role in reopening schools and developing a curriculum in Farmville, Virginia. In 1962, he pledged Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and remained a loyal and dedicated Life Member for 62 years.

It was in Mecklenburg County that Wilbert met the love of his life, Evelyn Dolores Carter. They exchanged vows on November 24, 1968 in Chase City, Virginia. Together, they were blessed with two children, Dr. Tasha Brooks Dickerson and Wilbert H. Brooks, III.

Wilbert's commitment to serving others extended beyond his educational pursuits. He was an active member of Zion Baptist Church South Richmond, where he served as a Deacon and Co-Chair of the Scholarship Committee, continuing his passion for educating the youth. Later, he transferred his membership to St. Peter Baptist Church, where he faithfully served on the Pastor’s Aid Committee.

Throughout his career in education, Wilbert made a significant impact on the lives of countless students. He began his teaching journey in Mecklenburg County at East End High School. He then moved to Richmond Public Schools, where he taught at Binford Middle School. Later, he transferred to Henrico County Public Schools, where he served as the department chair at Highland Springs High School. Wilbert’s dedication to education led him to Moody Middle School, where he served as the Assistant Principal before concluding his career at Henrico High School.

Wilbert was a sociable and outgoing individual who enjoyed connecting with people wherever he went. He was involved in several social clubs, including being a member of Club 533, where he served as the 26th President (2008-2010). Additionally, he was a member of the Theban Beneficial Club, a Connecting Link, Diques, Mules, and the D'JENTS.

Wilbert leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion. Surviving are his loving wife, Evelyn Carter Brooks; their two children, Dr. Tasha Brooks Dickerson (Reginald O. Dickerson, Sr.) and Wilbert H. Brooks, III; two grandsons, Reginald O. Dickerson, Jr. and Carter A. Dickerson; uncle, Carlton T. Brooks; aunt, Lois Brooks Johnson; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.

Mrs. Brooks & family, I was saddened to learn of Wilbert's passing. He was an early Blackwell industrial arts student of my father. After he continued his education at VSC and began his career, I came to know him as a fine gentleman. He really made my father's 96th birthday drive-by a memorable event by showing a "shop" project he completed at Blackwell. To all of our amusement . . . he still had it! As an adult, I often ran into Wilbert at various places = including Club 533. He always was a good friend and we always shared stories about my father / his instructor. May the family celebrate all the fond memories of Wilbert while mourning his loss. My prayers are with you as he rests in peace.

I too am deeply saddened by the transitioning of Brother Brooks. He and I were on line together in joining the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. I will never forget a time on line when my determination to be a Kappa was being sorely tested by action I hope is no longer in practice, and Brooks asked the Big Brothers to allow him to share my pain. This was a very caring act by him that was greatly appreciated by me. We truly became frat brothers. I really enjoyed our updating each other and reminiscing at our 50th class reunion in May 2014. Wilbert Brooks was indeed a wonderful person who will be certainly missed by all who knew him. I offer my profound condolences to his family. Ben Miller

Thanks to God for the opportunity to meet Mr. Brooks during our time together in the Henrico County School System. He was a stellar representative of the great Industrial Education Program from VSU and provided great advice, mentorship, and leadership for his students and fellow teachers. He served his family and communities well and used his gifts to empower others. Other than preaching, he served the highest calling one can have for our lives. We are all richer for knowing him and may God continue to strengthen and encourage your family now and forever. Sincerely, Sam Turner
