Dr. Latham’s academic career began at JW Ligon High School in Raleigh, North Carolina. After graduation, he attended North Carolina State University and received a B.S. in Zoology. Subsequently, he completed postgraduate studies in Physiology. He attended Meharry Medical College where he met Bernice, the love of his life. They went on to have four children: Ruth, Vicki, Wiley IV, and Michelle. Dr. Latham graduated from Meharry with his M.D. degree in 1971. He treated everyone he encountered with respect and kindness and was well-known for his great smile and friendly demeanor.
It was clear to all who knew him that Dr. Latham’s primary focuses in life were his faith, his family, and his patients. He was a devoted husband and father, and Bernice was his partner in life and in love. Wiley and Bernice provided an example of what marriage should be through their love and friendship. They also imbued their four children with a great love and faith in their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Dr. Latham was a dedicated and present father. He attended his children’s sporting events, helped with homework, provided a loving ear, and gave sound advice. He was always available when his children needed him. Once his own children grew up, he was blessed with five grandchildren and was an important role model and inspiration in their lives as well. His grandchildren brought him great joy and were a true light in his life.

Will always remember his forthright dedication to his God,Family and Relationships. Rest in peace Dr. Latham.
Dr. Latham, a towering figure, possessed a smile that matched his stature. Throughout his time at the MRMC's endoscopy suite, he never spoke ill of anyone and consistently displayed kindness. Working alongside him for years, I can confidently say that he was an absolute delight to collaborate with.
I remember Wiley as a humble, humorous and engaging person. Michael and l have fond memories of our time as neighbors across the street on Whistler Road. Our children grew up together and played together. Michelle and Kira were fast friends and still are. Wiley told me l was trying to get him in trouble after l found him on his bike after it got dark. Vicky and Ruthie were older than our children but they interacted well with the little ones. Wiley was always present for his family. Always put them and God first. He adored his Bernice. We will miss you Wiley. You will never be forgotten for the man and compassionate physician you were. Much love to the family! Sandra and Michael Bell.
Wiley was a rock to his family, patients and community. My condolences to Bernice and the family. I have many fond memories from our time at Meharry. Rest in peace.

Condolences to the Latham Family. "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning". Dr Latham was blessed and passed those blessings on to his family and others. His life was an example for others to emulate as a Christian, family man and practitioner. The bible states we are all blessed with gifts. We thank you Lord for his gifts and allowing him to share those gifts with us. James Barham Jr
