Emma Ruth (Jenkins) Jackson was born November 28, 1955 to the late Marshall and Vera Marie (Vessel) Jenkins in Fayette, Mississippi. She departed this life Saturday evening, February 13, 2021 at her home in Fayette, MS.

Emma began her education in 1960 at Liddell Attendance Center and graduated from Jefferson County High School in 1973. She furthered her education by attending Alcorn State University, receiving her BS and MS degrees in Biology. She received her Specialist degree (hours over her master’s) through Jackson State University, Jackson, MS.

Emma joined the Locust Grove Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend L. D. Woodley. She was a member and President of the Senior Choir and a member of the Women’s Auxiliary. She was a faithful member of both auxiliaries until her death. She always met her financial obligations to her church and often times gave above and beyond what was asked. She did this out of an obligation to the Word of God (giving your tithes and offerings) and for her love and dedication to her church. Emma was united in marriage to the late Julius Lee Hunt of Roxie, MS. To this union two children were born: Jizette Verinique and Jivarre Marshon. She was later united in marriage to the late Jarious Jackson of Fayette, MS.

Emma, by nature, was a teacher/educator. For many years, she was the Adult Sunday School Teacher, Teen Vacation Bible School Teacher, and Bible Study teacher. She used her skills as a teacher to urge her Bible Scholars to learn verses and study to find and have a deeper meaning of the Word of God. She believed as it is written in 2Timothy 2:15 ~ Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. ~ (KJV) As an educator, she was employed at Alcorn State University in Lorman, MS. She was an instructor in the Department of Biological Sciences and taught many students who went on to become doctors and other health professionals. She was very proud of her students’ accomplishments. She retired from Alcorn State University in 2016 after serving and educating students for 37 years. She was a loyal member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority since 1975 serving in different capacities at the local and regional level.

Emma was preceded in death by her parents: Marshall Jenkins and Vera Marie (Vessel) Jenkins; two sisters, Anna Ree Snyder and Brenda Lee Jenkins; one brother, Julius Earl Upton; her maternal grandparents, Truly and Ruth Doil Vessel; and her paternal grandparents, Frank Jenkins and Emma Jane Williams. She leaves to mourn two loving and dedicated children: Jizette Verinique Hunt and Jivarre Marshon Hunt of Fayette, MS; Her loving sister, Mary Ann McCoy (Leon) of Enid, OK; a niece and nephew, Brenita Collette Jenkins and Bryce Cornelius Jenkins of Harriston, MS; and a grand-nephew, Brendan Miguel Jenkins of Harriston; two aunts: Nellie Vessel of Chicago, IL and Maddie Ruth Hall of Fayette, MS; two uncles: Rusivelt Vessel, Sr. and Truly Vessel, Jr. (Evelyn) of Gonzales, LA; her cousin and caregiver, Helen Ruth (Vessel) Johnson, and a host of other cousins, relatives and friends.
