He departed this life on the evening of March 29, 2022 at St. Dominic Hospital.

OBITUARY

At an early age James accepted Christ Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior after hearing a message given by the late Pastor C.L. Lindsey from Biloxi, MS. He was baptized and joined St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church, located at that time on South Street in downtown Jackson.

James was a proud graduate of Jim Hill High School. He furthered his education at Mississippi Baptist Seminary, where he received his Bachelor of Theology in May of 1974 and his Masters of Theological Studies in May of 1982.

On January 10, 1965, James married the love of his life, Veola Christine Ervin. To this union, three beautiful children were born: James Auguster, Jr., Sonya Christine and Shaunte’ Denise.

James heard the call to preach while attending the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education at Ellis Auditorium in Memphis, Tennessee. He was subsequently licensed and ordained by his pastor, Rev. B.D. Rushing.

He was actively involved in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and actively participated in marches and meetings of that era.

The Jackson Community held a huge place in his heart. He worked closely with community leaders and served on boards and various committees throughout the city and county. He served the Jackson community as a Police Chaplain for the Jackson Police Department, and as a community leader with the Albermarle Neighborhood Association.

He had a heart for young people, which was evidenced by various groups he organized for young people in the community. Such groups included, but were not limited to, St. Peter Youth Council, St. Peter Bible and Basketball Ministry and St. Peter Day Care and Christian Academy.

He also actively participated and served in roles of leadership in many ministerial organizations and on many such boards. Such organizations include, but are not limited to, Metropolitan Ministerial Fellowship, which he co-founded, and The Jackson District Congress of Christian Education, where he served as President from 1971-1978.

He was an adoring grandfather to five precious grandchildren: Chelsee Jeanette, Kaitlyn Simone, Lindsee Christine, James Autrey and Nadiya Alandria. They were the light of his life. He rarely missed a dance performance , ballet recital, music recital or graduation.

James was preceded in death by his wife, Veola Christine Ervin Washington; his parents, Georgia White Washington and Thomas Washington, Sr.; his mother- in- law, Dorothy Kimbrough Ervin; his father-in-law, Clifton Thomas Ervin; his brothers, Samuel Washington, Sr., J.C. Coleman, Clarence Coleman; his sisters, Bertha Mae Burse, and Katie Mae Wright; his brothers-in-law Ben Joe Patterson, Howard Burse, Bobby C. Smith, Willie Till Gray, Clifton Ervin, Jr. and Curtis Ervin; his sisters-in-law, Dorothy Washington, Geraldine Washington and Catherine Coleman; his nephews, Keith Wright, Larry Jones and Waveland Gray; his neice, Shapri Washington; and two special cousins, Charlotte Pearson and Eloise Phillips.

He leaves to cherish his memories three loving and adoring children: James (Monica) Auguster, Jr. Sonya Christine and Shaunte’ Denise; five beautiful grandchildren, Chelsee Washington, Kaitlyn Anderson, Lindsee Washington, James Autrey Washington and Nadiya Johnson; two loving siblings, Thomas Washington of Lynwood, California and Patricia Patterson of Lanham, Maryland; two brothers-in-law Jerome Ervin of Chula-Vista, California and Samuel Dale (Gloria) Ervin of Atlanta, Georgia; four sisters-in-law, Jean Ervin Gray of Raleigh, Mississippi, Dorothy Ervin Smith of Lafayette, Louisiana, Michele Miller-Ervin of Slidell, Louisiana and Patricia Ervin of Jackson, Mississippi, and host a nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

Deepest sympathy to The Family of Pastor Rev James Washington... Truly an amazing 'Man Of GOD'.... Mrs Dixie Grant & Family

From the first time, I laid eyes on him while he was an Asst. Pastor (over at Cade's Chapel) and then as Pastor of St. Peter, and finally as my Pastor (beginning during my late teenage years) at White Chapel, I cannot remember any Teaching, Sermon, etc., by Pastor Washington where he did not have my full and undivided attention. Our LORD really used him mightily to lead me to HIS Salvation via Pastor's prayers for me and his Sermons to and at me! The day my Dad died, Pastor Washington was at the Hospital even before I got there. Coming over to me, as I was bent over sobbing, he handed-ly stood me up straight, looked me in my eyes, and said, "Nehemiah, your Daddy wouldn't come back here if he had the chance to!" I didn't understand what he really meant then, in fact, at the time, I thought it was somewhat a harsh thing to say to me during the time of what I perceived then as my biggest loss, but I soon learned exactly what he meant and WHO he was lovingly and encouragingly chiding me to come to know so that, like him now, one day I too would PERSONALLY KNOW & EXPERIENCE, "to be absent from the body, and to be present with THE LORD". The Sunday morning I preached my Trial Sermon at White Chapel, due to his Pastoral commitment, he couldn't be there, so he did the next best thing, he sent the love of his life, his wife [Sister] Veola, and young Shaunte' Denise. And I'll never forget the Fatherly Pastoral pride he displayed at my Ordination Service, nor how he was quick to tell people that I was one of his sons in the Ministry. And while I'm so thankful to have had him as a Teacher, a Pastor, a Mentor, I am more than thankful that we'll fellowship FOREVER with our LORD! Stay strong Washington Family, as he's now experiencing, face-to-face, THE LORD that he Taught and Preached about for as long as most of us can remember. See you later Pastor Washington! Nehemiah Thomas,

My sincere condolences. May God comfort you always. you are in my thoughts and prayers. Mary H.Simpson

Praying for the family. You have my deepest sympathy.

My Uncle James, an awesome man of God-full of Godly wisdom and Knowledge. Uncle James always was there to give godly advise-always gave godly counsel -he loved his family (his wife my Aunt Veola, what a love story to pattern after) he loved himself some Veola Washington. He was there to always encourage my husband and I and my children. We will always love you - you will be greatly missed. I will miss those conversations and the visits. Hebrew 12:1(Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.) my Uncle James lived a life that was pleasing to God and is now a great cloud of witness -that we can pattern after! Rest well Uncle James-you did fight a good fight and you made to the finish line! We love you, your niece Debra(Gray)Amos and Family !!

Our staff will continue to keep your family in our prayers. We thank you for allowing us to serve your family.
