OBITUARY

At an early age James accepted Christ Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior after hearing a message given by the late Pastor C.L. Lindsey from Biloxi, MS. He was baptized and joined St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church, located at that time on South Street in downtown Jackson.

James was a proud graduate of Jim Hill High School. He furthered his education at Mississippi Baptist Seminary, where he received his Bachelor of Theology in May of 1974 and his Masters of Theological Studies in May of 1982.

On January 10, 1965, James married the love of his life, Veola Christine Ervin. To this union, three beautiful children were born: James Auguster, Jr., Sonya Christine and Shaunte’ Denise.

James heard the call to preach while attending the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education at Ellis Auditorium in Memphis, Tennessee. He was subsequently licensed and ordained by his pastor, Rev. B.D. Rushing.

He was actively involved in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and actively participated in marches and meetings of that era.

The Jackson Community held a huge place in his heart. He worked closely with community leaders and served on boards and various committees throughout the city and county. He served the Jackson community as a Police Chaplain for the Jackson Police Department, and as a community leader with the Albermarle Neighborhood Association.

He had a heart for young people, which was evidenced by various groups he organized for young people in the community. Such groups included, but were not limited to, St. Peter Youth Council, St. Peter Bible and Basketball Ministry and St. Peter Day Care and Christian Academy.

He also actively participated and served in roles of leadership in many ministerial organizations and on many such boards. Such organizations include, but are not limited to, Metropolitan Ministerial Fellowship, which he co-founded, and The Jackson District Congress of Christian Education, where he served as President from 1971-1978.

He was an adoring grandfather to five precious grandchildren: Chelsee Jeanette, Kaitlyn Simone, Lindsee Christine, James Autrey and Nadiya Alandria. They were the light of his life. He rarely missed a dance performance , ballet recital, music recital or graduation.

James was preceded in death by his wife, Veola Christine Ervin Washington; his parents, Georgia White Washington and Thomas Washington, Sr.; his mother- in- law, Dorothy Kimbrough Ervin; his father-in-law, Clifton Thomas Ervin; his brothers, Samuel Washington, Sr., J.C. Coleman, Clarence Coleman; his sisters, Bertha Mae Burse, and Katie Mae Wright; his brothers-in-law Ben Joe Patterson, Howard Burse, Bobby C.
