Funeral services for Mr. Benjamin Franklin Blume, Sr., 79, of 769 Drag Strip Rd, Neeses, SC, will be held 1:00 pm Friday, June 14, 2019 at New Light United Methodist Church, 3100 Neeses Highway, Orangeburg, with interment to follow in Shady Grove Cemetery. Reverend Cassandra Jackson is officiating. Mr. Blume will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service.
Mr. Blume passed away on Monday, June 10, 2019 in Glen Burnie, Maryland.
Benjamin Franklin Blume, Sr., was born on June 22, 1939 in Neeses, SC. He is the son of the late Georgia Williams and Colie Blume Sr. He went home to be with the Lord early Monday June 10, 2019 in Glen Burnie, MD. Ben was educated in Orangeburg County Schools and graduated from Wilkinson High School. He began his Christian journey at Beauty Hill Baptist Church and later Shady Grove United Methodist Church where he gave his life to the lord as a young man. As a resident of Maryland he was a member of the Centennial United Methodist Church where he raised his children to love and serve the Lord. Upon returning to South Carolina he was a diligent servant at New Light United Methodist Church. He served with PPRC and the church council. He also sang with the adult choir; was a member of the United Methodist Men and was the Chair of the Finance Committee.
Brother Blume moved from Orangeburg, SC to Baltimore, MD in 1960. He worked for several years at a Nursery and truly had a gift for growing just about anything! He then began working for the Harry T Campbell Stone Company where he worked his way up to the level of Forman. Always having an entrepreneurial spirit; he embraced the opportunity to open a franchise. He opened a Meineke in 1981; becoming one of the few black owned businesses on Ritchie Hwy (Glen Burnie, MD). When he returned to South Carolina in his retirement years, he continued to work hard serving in his church and maintaining his land and many animals. He was a true music lover and was especially fond of anything by Lee Williams!
He had many titles over the years but his favorites were brother, friend and “Diddy”. He was preceded in death by his brother Colie Blume Jr; his sister Delores Hunter; and son Benjamin F. Blume, Jr. He leaves many to cherish his memory including: Siblings- Arthur Blume (Cynthia); Bernice Whack (Ellis) and James Blume Sr. Son Marvin Blume Sr. (Terry); daughter Karen Brown (Troy). Grand children: Marvin Blume Jr (Eva); Shantel T Blume; Troy Brown Jr., Kandace Brown, Trent Brown, Britney Blume, Benjamin “Frankie” Blume III (Kalen); and Mariah Blume. Great granddaughters: Kimora and Di’Yohni. Special friend Ms. Ethel and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
