Rev. Leonard Huggins is officiating.
Henry Summers was born on March 7, 1930, to the late James and Phelesia Summers, in Dorchester County, South Carolina. He was the youngest of nine children- six boys and three girls. He is the last to join his siblings.
He was educated in the public schools of Orangeburg County and was a graduate of "Bethune Rosen Wald" in Bowman, SC. When he finished high school, he ventured to Columbia, and found employment at Fort Jackson Military Installation, where he worked for three years before relocating to New York. He resided there for 45 years, working for New York City Housing until retirement in 1991.
Henry accepted Christ at an early age, and rejoined his home church, Shady Grove United Methodist Church, upon his return to Bowman, South Carolina. He became a member of the Male Chorus and United Methodist Men, which was a joy. He helped wherever he was needed. You only had to call.
He took pride in working around the home, fixing whatever he could. He loved to garden and had a green thumb, until his health began to fail. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife, brothers and sister-in-law.
Those remaining with loving memories are: his wife, Elaine of 30 years of the home; one daughter, Rhonda Murphy-Brathwaite of Astoria, NY; one son, Clarence Bolton, reared in the home, of Columbia, SC; son, Delano Murphy; two granddaughters: Nyasia Murphy of Tuson, AZ and Aa Liyah Lynch of Columbia, SC; two grandsons: Isaiah Brathwaite of Astoria, NY and Elijah Bolton of Columbia, SC; one brother-in-law, Samuel Johnson of Orangeburg, SC; numerous nieces, nephews from New York, Maryland, Washington, D.C.; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.
