Obituary For Mr. Tommy Washington

Funeral services for Mr. Tommy Washington, Sr., 84, of 2310 Carver School Road, Cope, will be held 2:00pm, Sunday, November 20, 2022, at Simmons Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel, 2868 Columbia Road, Orangeburg, SC, with interment to follow in Heavenly Rest Memorial Park. Rev. Dr. Herman Prince is officiating.

Born January 5, 1938, Tommy Washington, Sr. was the beloved son of the late Elease Washington Jacob and Herbert Cannon. Surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren, Tommy peacefully transitioned from this earthly life on November 16, 2022 at the Regional Medical Center of Orangeburg, South Carolina.

At an early age, Tommy joined Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Prior to his retirement, he was a dedicated and faithful employee at Edisto High School of Cordova, SC for over thirty years. He earned multiple awards and honors for his excellent work ethic and going above-beyond attitude. Tommy also worked for many years in the farming industry during the earlier years of his career.

Tommy was a very hardworking person. Tommy was a kind and humble person. He was a man of few words who was soft-spoken. He was a person of integrity and honor who took care of his family despite everything. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, watching wrestling, chopping wood, gardening, and spending time with the family’s fur baby: Nugget.

Tommy was preceded in death by father Herbert Cannon, his mother Elease Washington Jacob, his brother Richard Washington, and his sister Lillie Mae Cannon.

Left to cherish his loving memories and enduring legacy are: his loving wife of 60 years, Gussie Govan Washington; one son, Tommy Washington, Jr. of Cordova, SC; five daughters: Janie W. Best of Atlanta, Georgia; Ruthie W. Guinyard of Orangeburg, SC; Rebecca Washington and Arline Washington both of Cope, SC; and Latory W. Felder of Washington, DC.; seven grandchildren: Ashley Hickson, Bradford Best, Xavier (Sarah) Best, Raven Johnson, Candace Jones, Zander Felder, Langston Felder and; four great-grandchildren; four sisters; one brother; four sisters-in law; a fur baby of the family, Nugget; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Visitation will be held Saturday, November 19, 2022, from 2:00pm - 6:00pm.

Family and friends may visit the residence of his wife, Mrs. Gussie Washington, 2310 Carver School Road, Cope between the hours of 3:00pm – 7:00pm daily. Condolences may also be expressed via telephone, at (803) 531-0016, or Simmons Funeral Home and Crematory of Orangeburg, SC.
