Obituary For Mrs. Adell Thompson

Funeral services for Mrs. Adell Thompson, 107, of 149 Demo Lane, Santee, will be held 2:00pm, Sunday, October 1, 2023, at Lake Marion High School Gymnasium, 3656 Tee Vee Road, Santee, with interment to follow in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery, Santee.

Mrs. Thompson will be placed in the gymnasium one hour prior to the service.

Mother Adell Julia (Julie) Green Thompson, affectionately called “Momma, Grandma and Aunt Julie,” daughter of the late Adam Ferguson Green, Sr. And Alice Seaberry Green was born on October 10, 1915 in Santee, South Carolina. God looked down and called her to eternal rest on Monday, September 25, 2023.

Julie, as she was affectionately called, was educated at the Orangeburg Training School located in Elloree, SC. Prior to her graduation, she served as a second grade substitute teacher for Mrs. Janie Hampton and Ms. Johnson at the school. She graduated the eleventh grade (the highest grade at the time) in June of 1936 receiving an “A” degree and a scholarship. She received her teacher certification upon completion of her college courses and taught at the Parler School (the family school).

On December 24, 1940, Julie was united in holy matrimony by Reverend A.N. Hampton, pastor of Parlerville AME Church Santee, SC to the late Eddie Thompson, Sr, who preceded her in death 20 years earlier on September 13, 2003. Their union was blessed with four children.

At an early age of twelve, Julie accepted Christ and joined Chapel Hill Baptist Church, Santee SC where she was a faithful member and served as a Sunday School Secretary. In 1941, she joined Parlerville AME Church to worship and serve alongside her husband Eddie Sr., where she also served as Sunday School Secretary at Parlerville AME Church and remains a faithful member.

Julie provided for her family by working on the family farm of her brothers, especially on the sweet potato farm until December 1993, providing domestic service for many families in the Parlers community over many years, and picking cotton. Even though she worked hard, she had hobbies. She enjoyed rolling coins, gardening, raising chickens, watching the NBC Nightly News and WISTV 10 News (of which she can name the newscasters and meteorologists). She also enjoyed reading the Bible and the Times and Democrat newspaper, watching Game Show Network channel, and making homemade candy, jams, and remedies for colds and aches/pains. She was an avid reader of the Word of God, the Word for You Today, and Our Daily Bread devotionals. She also enjoyed quilting and making homemade lye soap; traditions she has passed down to her daughter, Maxine (quilting) and her eldest grandson Andrew (lye soap).

Julie attributes her longevity to her faith in the Lord and is often heard exclaiming “To God Be The Glory”! Her favorites scriptures were Exdous 20, Psalm 27, Matthews 5 and her motto is “Worship the Lord, do the right thing, be honest, treat everybody right, and God will bless you”! Julie was the Matriarch of the Seaberry, Green and Thompson Family before she was called home by her Heavenly Father God to rest.

Julie has been one of the few to exist for 20 U.S. Presidents and she marveled over the fact that she lived to see our first Black President, 26 State of South Carolina Governors, two World Wars, the Great Depression, the 911 Attack, a new millennium, COVID pandemic, and many many more historical events. Again, she credits her longevity to her faith in God.

Julie was preceded in death by her husband, son Jonathan, parents, four brothers: Adam Jr., Jack, Coleman, Eugene, and one half sister Rachel.

Julie leaves to cherish her memories, her children: loving and caring daughter Maxine Thompson of the home; two sons: Eddie “Bubba”Thompson, Jr. of Greenboro, NC and CSM (Ret) Elder Hayward Thompson, Sr of Grovetown, GA; bonus son, Michael Brantley of Elloree, SC; bonus daughter, Connie Rumph of Columbia, SC; three grandchildren reared in the home: Andrew Thompson of Santee, SC, Anthony Tyrone Thompson of Columbia, SC and Hayward Thompson, Jr. of Bamberg, SC; five grandchildren: Rodney (LaTisha), Donte, Tobias, TaLor and Haydeanea; sixteen great-grandchildren: Ashley, Kalyn, Dayla, Tre’shard, Jalon, Anthony Jr., Zykyia, Ashantia, Rodney, Jr., Juwan, Leevonya, Emory, Re’Yanna, Le’la, Tiana and De’Shaun; six great-great grandchildren: Kylie,Karson, Zaya, Za’kai, Alexander and Delton; one brother-in-law, Frank Thompson of Columbia, SC; one special niece, Mammie Bannister of Santee, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that she loved unconditionally.

Visitation will be held Saturday, September 30, 2023, from 11:00am - 6:00pm.

Family and friends may visit the residence, 149 Demo Lane, Santee or call Simmons Funeral Home of Santee.
