Funeral services for Mrs. Dorothy Zimmerman, 88, of Orangeburg, SC, will be held 11:00am, Thursday, April 11, 2024, at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Cameron. Interment will be held 12:00pm, Friday, April 19, 2024, at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery, Columbia.
Mrs. Zimmerman will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service.
Mrs. Zimmerman passed away Thursday, April 4, 2024, at MUSC Health-Orangeburg.
Dorothy Mae Taylor Zimmerman was born on March 27, 1936 in Manning, South Carolina to Alvin Taylor, Sr. and Rebecca Holliday Taylor. Dorothy was raised in a Christian home and a loving family. She joined the Ebenezer Baptist Church, Manning, South Carolina at an early age. Dorothy received her formal education at Manning Training School, where she graduated in the class of 1953 and she attended Benedict College.
Dorothy migrated to New York city, where she met and married the Love of her life James “Sonny" Zimmerman, July 1959. To this beautiful union, they were blessed with one son, Derek. Dorothy and her family were faithful members of the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Brooklyn, New York and later joined Salem Missionary Baptist Church, Brooklyn, NY. She was highly valued and a respected Paraprofessional within the New York City Public School System. She retired in 1995 after 15 years of dedicated service. Dorothy and James relocated to Manning, South Carolina in 1996. She re-joined her childhood church Ebenezer Baptist Church, where she served as an Usher. She was a faithful community servant volunteering with the Clarendon County School System and the Meals on Wheels-Clarendon County Council on Aging. In 2022, Dorothy and James moved to Orangeburg, South Carolina. They were devoted parishioners at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Cameron, South Carolina.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Alvin Taylor, Jr., Herbert Taylor; sisters, Loretta Taylor Burroughs and Vivian Juanita Taylor.
Dororthy leaves to cherish her precious memories: Her devoted and loving husband, James “Sonny” Zimmerman of the home, Son, Derek Zimmerman (Gwendolyn) of Fishkill, New York; granddaughter: Jasmine Hall, of Brooklyn, New York; brother, Gilbert Taylor of Columbia, South Carolina; nephews, Alvin Taylor, III, Charlotte, North Carolina, Savay Burroughs of Columbia, South Carolina and Victor Taylor of Columbia, South Carolina; nieces, Cynthia Taylor Fairweather-Duncan (Daryl) of Lake Wylie, South Carolina; Christina Sotan and Loretta Taylor of Columbia, South Carolina. Her beloved in-laws, sisters, Dorothy Z. Elmore, Liz Zimmerman Keitt and Evia Z. Thomas, all of Orangeburg, South Carolina; Brothers, Joe L Zimmerman (Carol) of New Jersey and Leroy Zimmerman (Alice), of Cumming, Georgia; Nieces, Nephews, and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 10, 2024, from 12:00pm - 6:00pm.
Family and friends may visit 28 Hawthorne Trail, Orangeburg or call Simmons Funeral Home and Crematory of Orangeburg.
