Funeral services for Mrs. Jennie Elizabeth Miller, 85, of Orangeburg, SC, will be held 11:00am, Friday, January 5, 2024, at New Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 1785 Amelia Street, Orangeburg, with interment to follow in Belleville Memorial Garden. Rev. Todd Brown is officiating.
Mrs. Jennie Elizabeth Miller departed this earthly life peacefully in her home, transitioning into eternal life surrounded by her family on Wednesday, December 27, 2023. She was born on August 29, 1938 in Notasulga, Alabama to Mrs. Orean Robinson and Mr. John Robinson, Sr.
Jennie was named after her paternal grandmother, who taught her to build a strong relationship with God through prayer and to value education. She attended grade school in Alabama, and Stamford High School in Connecticut, where she obtained her GED. It was in Connecticut that she met her husband, John Edward Miller; and their union was blessed with three children. Subsequently, she furthered her education by obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education; a Master of Science degree in Education; and a Professional Diploma for Advanced Study with Specialization in Elementary Education from the University of Bridgeport. All of these educational accomplishments were earned while working as an educator in the Stamford Public School System. In addition, Jennie obtained and maintained her Certification to Serve as a Professional Educator in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8 from the State of Connecticut Department of Education.
Jennie’s strong work ethic helped her take advantage of opportunities to work as a cashier and sales assistant at Bloomingdales and develop her clerical skills; which were later employed as a secretary at Dorr-Oliver. She went on to pursue her passion for education and teaching, as a Teacher’s Aide in the Stamford Public School System. As Jennie took advantage of opportunities to further her education, she qualified for teaching positions that became available in the Elementary Schools throughout the City of Stamford. Shifting demographics among school-aged populations, innovations in teaching styles, and relocation of schools among urban and rural areas of the city allowed her to serve as a Kindergarten Teacher at several elementary schools in the City of Stamford: (Rice Elementary, Ryle Elementary, Toquam Elementary, and Northeast Elementary Schools). She continued to demonstrate her love for her community and profession as a founding member of the Chancellors and Chancellorettes (a 501c3 organization through which scholarships were made available to college students); the Stamford Education Association, and the Connecticut Teachers Association.
Jennie’s love and devotion to God was nurtured by her namesake. As a youth she attended Shiloh Baptist Church of Notasulga, Alabama. Her service and dedication of faith was also evidenced through her work as a member of Union Baptist Church (UBC) in Stamford, CT; where she served as a teacher in the Children and Youth Education Department. While there she also used her voice in service and adoration to God as a lead singer in the UBC Sanctuary Choir, and as a gospel soloist performing in statewide church programs with Mother Marie Wiggins of Bridgeport Connecticut, as well as in a rally in Stamford, Connecticut at which the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke in the 1960’s. Jennie also participated in the Union Baptist Church’s Bowling League. She later went on to become a founding member of Friendship Baptist Church in Stamford, CT, and contributed financially to its upkeep until she relocated to South Carolina with her husband. While in Orangeburg, she and her husband joined New Mount Zion Baptist Church on the profession of their christian experience, where they were both honored with Golden Ambassador Awards in 2022.
Jennie leaves to celebrate her life, her loving husband John Edward Miller; three daughters: Edwenia Elizabeth (Keith) Daniels, Deborah Ann Miller, and Lorie Denise Miller; a Brother In-Law and a Sister In-Law; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her siblings: Eugenia (John, Sr) Williams, John, Jr. (Judy) Robinson, Carl, Sr. (Victoria) Robinson, Aaron (Lucille) Robinson, and Alberdeen Robinson.
Public viewing will be held Friday, January 5, 2024, from 9:30am until the hour of service.
