Funeral services for Mrs. Lessie Lewis, 101, of Orangeburg will be held 11:00 am, Saturday, July 8, 2023 at Cedar Grove Baptist Church, Norwary, SC, with interment to follow in Belleville Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Lessie Jacobs Lewis was born on August 25, 1921 to the late Charlie and Mary Mayes Jacobs in Orangeburg, South Carolina. She quietly departed this life at Methodist Oaks, Orangeburg, South Carolina on Saturday, July 1, 2023.
Lessie was educated in the public schools of Orangeburg County and was a graduate of Wilkinson High School.
At an early age, she joined Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Norway, South Carolina, where she was an active member and sung on the senior choir. After high school, she married Eugene Lewis, and they briefly moved to Columbia, South Carolina before relocating to Washington, D.C. and New York. While in New York, Mrs. Lewis was an active member of Goodwill Baptist Church in Bronx, New York, where she served on many auxiliaries.
From her union with Eugene, four children were born: David, Mary, Gwen and Charles.
During her time in the workforce, she worked in housekeeping, as a cashier, and a short time at the Pentagon before relocating and retiring in South Carolina.
Lessie was preceded in death by her parents and four siblings.
Mrs. Lessie Lewis leaves to cherish memories: four children: David, Mary (Robert), Gwen, and Charles; five granddaughters: Gina, Robin, Deirdre, Kari and Charlynn; six great-grandchildren: Ariana, Nyilah, Jordan, Robbie, A.J. and Samantha; and a host of nieces, nephews, loving family and friends.
Visitation will be held 1-6:00 pm Friday, July 7, 2023.
