Funeral services for Ms. Lois Simmons, 91, of Brooklyn, NY, will be held at 1:00pm Saturday, January 18, 2020 at Summer Grove Baptist Church 2465 Old Barnwell Road, Williston, SC, with interment to follow in the church cemetery. Reverend Wilbur Simmons and Reverend T. E. Simmons are officiating.
Ms. Simmons will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service.
Sister Lois Louise Simmons, a resident of Brooklyn, New York, was born in Aiken County, South Carolina. She was sixth oldest child of the late Reverend Jackson Simmons and Ernestine Corley Simmons.
She received her formal education in Aiken County Public Schools and Bettis Academy High School and Junior College of Trenton, South Carolina.
Professing her faith and accepting Christ as her Lord and Master, she united with the Summer Grove Missionary Baptist Church. She was also a member of Brooklyn Tabernacle, Brooklyn, NY.
Lois was also the President of the 457 Schenectady Avenue Tenant’s Association.
After relocating to Brooklyn, New York, she was joined in Holy Matrimony with Roy Wilshire. To this union, they were blessed with one daughter, Elaine Wilshire.
In later years, she wed Fred Wallace.
She was employed by the Department of Social Services until she retired. In addition to her services to the state of New York, she was an industrious and skilled seamstress.
She was preceded in death by her father, Reverend Jackson Simmons; her mothers: Ernestine Corley Simmons and Effie Mae Toney Simmons; husbands, Roy Wilshire and Fred Wallace; two sisters: Thelma Bellinger and Jackie Simmons; and six brothers: Erman, Willie, Robert, Stanfield, Linbergh and Ulysses Simmons.
She is survived by her daughter, Elaine Wilshire of Brooklyn, NY; two step-sons: Raul (Helyn) Wilshire of San Antonio, TX and Hymi (Andrea) Wilshire of Chicago, IL; six brothers: Walter Simmons of Cope, SC, Wendell (Javaisa) Simmons of Aiken, SC, Rev. Wilbur J. (Edna) Simmons and John Simmons both of Williston, SC, Paul (Tiffany) Simmons of Orangeburg, SC and Rev. Thomas E. (Angela) Simmons of Maulding, SC; four sisters: Justine Sanders of Williston, SC, Henrietta Johnson of Jersey City, NJ, Elizabeth Simmons of Williston, SC and Blanche Wimberly of Wagener, SC; five grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Mary Simmons and Judy Simmons; and a host of other nieces, nephews, loving relatives and dear friends.
Ms. Simmons passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at her residence.
Visitation will be held Friday, January 17, 2020 from 4:00pm-7:00pm at Simmons Memorial Chapel of Elko, 10227 Highway 78, Elko, SC (803) 266-2939.
