Obituary For Ms. Rebecca Mack Harrison

Funeral services for Ms. Rebecca Harrison, 79, of 780 Nance Street, Orangeburg, SC, will be held 2:00pm, Thursday, February 2, 2023, at Simmons Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel, 2868 Columbia Road, Orangeburg, SC, with interment to follow in St. Stephen United Methodist Church Cemetery. Pastor Kenneth Carter is officiating.

In His divine wisdom, grace and mercy, God whispered to our mother, sister, loved one, friend, Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am agentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light. (Matthew 11:28-30) .

Rebecca Mack was born and lived most of her life in Orangeburg, SC. She lived in New York for several years as a young woman with her sister, Jeanette Taylor. She became especially close to her cousin Mal Heyward.

When she moved back home, she became a Certified Nurse’s Assistant. She loved her job, even though she labored many long shifts.

She “spoiled” many babies in the rocking chairs of the Orangeburg Regional Hospital, including most (if not all) of her many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends. Everyone knew to call on “Beck” if they had any issues with their babies, and she would be there.

While working at the hospital, she met many doctors, nurses, other employees and friends. We often heard her talk fondly of someone every day including: Dr. Richardson, Dr. Kilgore, Ms. Annie Mae Jackson, Ms. Queen Ester Robinson, Ms. Debra Myers, her longtime head nurse Ms. Micke Whishunt and many others. From then forward, she and her niece, Teresa Felder (a nurse) were the family medical consultants 😊.

She loved styling hair also, so she decided to try “her hand” at it and received a license in Cosmetology from Kenneth Shuler.

She dabbled in many business adventures with her late husband Otis “Dougie’ Harrison. They reconnected after several years and got married shortly after she moved back to Orangeburg. She became close to *Momma Lee and *Mr. Harold and all of their children during that time. Momma Lee would always make sure the children had gloves and socks for Christmas. She would pack peanut butter and jelly swirled sandwiches and a napkin for school lunches.

Otis was only one of a few loves in her 79 years of life. Her first love was Dr. *Shellie Louis, who could do no wrong in her eyes. They met at Wilkinson High School where she graduated in 1963. She left Orangeburg to live in New York where she met and married *Howard Hall. When she returned to SC, she fell in love with her “soul mate” *John Henry “Johnny “Boy” Brown. He made her happy and treated her children like his own for many years, until he departed this life. Through the years, she was loved as anyone should be. We would like to thank anyone who made her smile or gave her joy.

Mom retired from Orangeburg Regional Hospital after over thirty plus years to enjoy a life of simple pleasures, like shopping at the flea markets with her special Uncle Ellis “Pop” Mack. She could always count on him when she needed him, and he likewise.

She also loved to call on her nephew, Edward “Charlie Brown” Pellman for various fixes, and he was always there for her as well. Charlie, like many of the older cousins (Tank, Josh, Sandy, Teresa and Jig, among them) spent many days and nights at the house, and we at theirs as children, so we were mostly like brothers and sisters.

In addition, mom would chat on the phone for hours in particular bragging on her grandbabies with numerous people from SC to California to New York. She spoke especially often to her special cousin, Shirley O’Neal (children: Jimmy “Jig” Mike, and Sandra and Ruthie) and her big sister Betty (*Edward “Butchie” Pellman, who keep her laughing) and many others.

She would even call her sister Jeanette (*Lionel) Taylor in California and her nephew Reggie (Marilyn) Cash in New York often. Just recently, they shared stories of aches and pains and laughed about old family fun times like dinner at Grandma’s house.

Her mother the late Mrs. Betty “Sistrunk” Mack was the backbone of our family.

Her father was the late Mr. Dave Mack, Sr. Mom also loved to shop as mentioned earlier. Her baby sister, Mrs. Agnes (*Vincent) Thompson (*Winfield Glover), spent many hours with her at her favorite store, Roses. Mom was one of eleven children including the ones previously mentioned: Pearl (Ozie) Thompson (of Orangeburg), one of her four surviving sisters. Previous to in death* were: *Emma (*Robert) Cash, *Mary Lou Felder, *Virginia (*Harold) Guinyard (Nathaniel) Barton, *Dorothy (*Dan) Webb , *Lil Miss Mildred Mack. She has one brother Dave Mack, Jr.

Rebecca also leaves to cherish a lifetime of fond memories with her children, their children and their children's children. She would not have it any other way than to mention her prides and joys. Her sons are: Troy D. (Latonia Simmons) Mack – Step children: Jeffrey and Byron Pointer Step grand-children: Whitney and Brittany Pointer -Children: Trolise , Tristann (the twins), Amber Mack (child: “Sammie” Michel), Tameka Mack (child- Nasir), Troy Mack, Jr., (child-Kaylee), Tara (Devonte) Fisher (child-Kacen) Best Friends: Chet Jackson and Prayer Partners Christopher “Chris” R. Mack (children: KeAnjane “KeeKee” Govan (bonus friends- Tama and “Mr.” Chris Grant) A’Mya Govan (special cousin Vir’nesha “NeeNee”), Patrick Govan, (Father- Patrick Govan) , Keniya Johnson (Father- Kenji Jonson). Although she loved all of her grandchildren equally, the baby Keniya “Scoot” gave her in particular joy and laughter this last year. AMya was her personal assistant, Patrick was was her since of pride, while Kena was like a daughter. Life long friend- Brenda Gardner, Bonus Daughter Tyrea, stepson Cortez, step daughter Courtney* and Sister In Laws: Adriene Williams, Tina (Patrick A,) Barber, (Cheryl Williams and Michelle (Robert) Shivers. Bonus Sister - Wanda Brown, Sisters-in-law: Diane Mintz, Anne Mintz, Mia Mintz, Missy Mintz. Nieces and Nephews: *Valeria, Reggie, Venus, and Ronnie Cash; Felicia, Causha, Sathia Guinyard; Edward Charlie Brown Pellman , Heddie (Eric) Carson, Sharlene (Vet) Foster, Teresa, Ozie Tankâ Faye) Thompson, Jr, Andra (Kedra), and Tasha Thompson; Teresa Felder Williams, Telma Glover (Calvin) Davis (her fellow hoarding niece-often enjoyed collecting junk together) Latisha and John Taylor; Latoya Webb, Dave Jr,. She also leaves with fond memories and a host of other nieces, nephews, grands, great grands, other relatives, and friends.

A little country girl ‘off of Sunny Side” (if you know you know), departed this world on January 24, 2023, and left an unforgettable legacy of love and sweet memories. Some memories to make you laugh and others that will bring you to tears, but all and all a beautiful life none the less. But there is more “good news” it does not stop at her earthly story. "For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a made with hands, eternal in the building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens."(2 Corinthians 5:1).

Until we meet again.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 1, 2023, from 2:00pm-6:00pm.
