Today, I honor and remember Ms. Shirley A. Hugee with a heart full of gratitude and love.
While attending Claflin University, Ms. Hugee welcomed me and my family into her home with such kindness and generosity. What made her even more special was that her love and care did not end after graduation. She remained the same thoughtful, considerate, giving, and patient woman throughout the years.
Ms. Hugee was my advisor when I became a member of the Gamma Chi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. In 1985. She advised us with wisdom and grace, but never micromanaged. Instead, she allowed us the space to grow into our leadership, develop as young women, and thrive as a sorority on campus. That was one of her greatest gifts — she believed in people and empowered them to become their best selves.
She possessed such a sweet spirit that you could truly see God working through her actions. Even during moments when she may have been upset, disappointed, or heartbroken, she never allowed outside circumstances to change who she was on the inside. She continued to walk in humility, grace, and love.
I am especially thankful that I had the opportunity to see and speak with Ms. Hugee during Claflin's Homecoming in November 2025. We laughed, reminisced, and joked about her phone number still being the same as she warmly told me to call anytime. That conversation is now a memory I will treasure forever.
I am already missing Ms. Hugee. With so many lives crossing her path, I am deeply honored that she remembered me and my family.
Rest in Heaven, Ms. Hugee. Your work will continue to speak for you for years to come. You left behind a beautiful legacy and some very big shoes to fill. In Love. Peace, and Blessings, Lenora Scott, Class of 1988
I will always have fond memories of Ms. Hugee since meeting her in the Student Support Services Department at Claflin University. Her smile was radiant, and she stood tall as she proudly welcomed me to the Claflin University Family. In addition, as a high school counselor, I worked with Ms. Hugee to identify students for the Upward Bound/Trio Programs. Her impact and exemplary leadership will never be forgotten!
Ms. Hugee, you will be (and are already) sorely missed. I've k own you since Mom taught you at Claflin. And I can't imagine Upward Bound without your smile or your walking the campus in your trusty sneakers. Your love for Claflin, for Trinity, for Delta always shone so brightly and it will forever be felt. God, thank you for the time you allowed Shirley Anne here in our lives and blessed us with her presence. Sleep, my Sister. Love you always.
I will miss your sweet spirit, my dear colleague and friend. I am sending my deepest condolences and prayers to your family and friends. May God continue to bless and keep them
