Rev. Barton Elliott Harris, 75, of Nashville, transitioned September 24, 2026. A graduate of Pearl High School, Fisk University, he served Westwood Baptist Church, University Center, as pastor for 37 years before becoming Pastor Emeritus. He also taught mathematics at Tennessee State University and McMurray Middle School, where he was named Teacher of the Year in 1995. His life of ministry, education, and community service touched generations. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 48 years, Carolyn Washington Harris; siblings; nieces and nephews; godchildren and spiritual children; and his beloved Westwood church family. Public viewing, Thursday October 1, 2026, 3-7pm, Smith Funeral Home, 706 Monroe Street. Friday October 2, 2026, 12-7pm, Westwood Baptist Church University Center, 2510 Albion Street. Will lie in state at Westwood Baptist Church University Center Saturday October 3, 2026, 10-11am with funeral service to follow. Entombment, Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
