Our Beloved Leroy Samuel Sawyer
Leroy Samuel Sawyer born January 26, 1936, in Mt. Airy, North Carolina to the late Samuel and Emma Sawyers. He was one of seventeen children. Leroy transitioned to be with the Lord on August 17, 2022.
As a young man, Leroy acknowledged Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of his life. Leroy was educated in the West Virginia school system, graduating in 1953.
Leroy called a few places home before he and his family settled in Atlanta, Georgia in 2005. It was in Detroit he met the love of his life, Juanita, whom he wed in Holy matrimony on April 19, 1959, in Newark, New Jersey. This beautiful union was blessed with two children—Jeffrey and Cheryl.
Leroy is a veteran of the Unites States Army, honorably serving his country from 1959-1961. He was employed by Ford Motor Company for over 30 years as a forklift operator, retiring in 1986. Always in service to others, Leroy spent the next 20 years feeding his community through volunteer work at St. Ann’s Food in Newark, NJ.
Leroy loved his family and would travel near and far to visit his siblings. He never met a stranger and would help anyone. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed daily walks in his neighborhood. Leroy was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Juanita Sawyer, his son Jeffrey Sawyer Sr., three brothers: Fred Sawyer, Robert Sawyers, and Lindsey Sawyer, four sisters: Estelle Tucker, Catherine Smith, Marilyn Moore, and Josephine Cook. Leroy was loved by so many and leaves to cherish his memories; his children: Cheryl Washington, Andre (Teresa) Mintz and Debora Turner; grandchildren: Jasmin Washington, Jeffrey (Elle) Sawyer Jr., Paris Johnson Jr., Anthony Mintz Sr., Christopher Mintz, Anyanna Mintz, Olivia Mintz and Jocelyn Mintz; four great grandchildren: Cameron Washington, Ashton Johnson, Anthony Mintz Jr., and Andrew Mintz; one sister: Elaine (Percy) Davis; four brothers: William (Amanda) Sawyers, Larry Sawyers, Wayne (Sandra) Sawyers, and Michael (Cheryl) Sawyers; two special nieces: Karma Sawyers and Michelle Hewlett-Liggans and a host of other relatives and friends.

Uncle Leroy you were a father figure in my life Always reminding me of dad. I truly enjoyed the walks around the neighborhood where you showed me how to zig zag up the hill instead of walking in a straight line as well all the long talks we shared. You teaching me how to cook salmon croquettes although they were never as good as yours. I will always cherish the times we spend together. Love you forever and a day❤.Rest peacefully 💛
