Rose was the youngest of six children born on May 22, 1927 in New Bern, North Carolina to the loving couple of John and Alneater. She attended the public schools of Craven County. Rose was orphaned at the tender age of 10 and went to live with a relative. The grief that she experienced doing this time was great, additionally she had to drop out of school in order to work and help support herself. Nonetheless, she persevered and continued to embrace the goal of one day completing her education. Rose was very ambitious and upon moving to New York for the purpose of helping pay tuition for her daughter, she also began exploring educational opportunities for herself. She was able to obtain her GED, enroll in and graduate from Brooklyn College with her BA degree in English and with the honor of Magna Cum Laude. Eventually Rose moved to Maryland where her daughter lived. Soon thereafter she enrolled in Bowie State University and received a Masters Degree. She was employed in the New York Public School System and in the Montgomery County Government in Maryland. One day while living in New Bern, Rose and a close cousin were approached by a woman offering to give them a bible study. They took this study and were baptized into the Seventh Day Adventist Church as young women. Rose became very active in church and over the years held the following offices: Treasurer, Sabbath School Superintendent, Sabbath School Teacher, Choir Director, Choir Member, AYS leader, and Member of Community Services. She organized church socials, participated on the Board, took part in the ingathering campaign, piano accompanist, served meals to the needy under the auspices of Community Services, along with numerous other activities. God blessed Rose with a beautiful voice and she frequently sang in the various churches she attended, including First, Dupont and Capitol Hill SDA Churches in Washington D. C., and Bethel SDA Church in New York. She directed two plays, The Boy Who Caught A Fish and For He Had Great Possessions. These plays were given multiple times in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Maryland, and North Carolina. Anyone who knew Rose saw her as a wonderful, spiritual person who loved to help others. She loved inviting friends to dinner, parties and other events. Rose especially loved to play table games such as scrabble, sorry, rook, etc. Whenever a game table was set up she would be the first one there. Rose loved to dress and was complimented by many about how well she looked. Although she loved to buy beautiful clothing, she was very frugal. Growing up, her daughter thought they were rich because of how well she managed her meager salary. Rose was always told by her daughter that she was the best mother in the world and with no doubt she was. Rose favorite scripture was Psalms 91.
