Obituary For Thelma Sumter

Florence – Funeral service for Mrs. Thelma B. Sumter will be conducted 2:00 PM Sunday, February 9, 2020 at J. O. & Annette Smith Memorial Chapel, 307 S. Johns St., Florence, directed by Smith Funeral Home of Florence, LLC.

Thelma, the daughter of Lela Westbury-Butler and raised by her grandparents, Joseph and Lela Butler of Woodrow, South Carolina was born June 28, 1943. On Monday, February 3, 2020, she was called home to be with her Lord and Savior. Thelma received the greatest grace of eternal peace, where there is no sadness or tears.

Thelma was united in marriage to the late Robert Sumter, Sr. and to this union two children were born.

After relocating to Florence, Thelma joined New Ebenezer Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Dr. Norman Gamble, where she attended faithfully until her health declined.

Thelma was employed as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

Thelma was preceded in death by her mother; her grandparents; and her husband.

Thelma’s precious memories, beautiful smile, gracious and considerate expressions of love to all will always be remembered and cherished by: a devoted son, Robert Sumter, Jr. of the home; her loving daughter, Angela Sumter of Florence, South Carolina; four grandson, Kardden Sumter of the home, Shaquille Sumter, Antavious Sumter, and Jamese Durant all of Florence, South Carolina; one granddaughter, Diamond Graham of Baltimore, Maryland; two great grandchildren, Jeremiah Graham of Baltimore, Maryland and Tynslee Sumter of Timmonsville, South Carolina; a very special friend of 30 years, James Wilson of Lake City, South Carolina; a very special sister-in-law, Mystyen Davis of Sumter, South Carolina; two very special loved ones dear to her heart, Laki Johnson of Florence, South Carolina and Cedrick Wilson of Lake City, South Carolina; and a host of nephews; nieces; other relatives; and friends.

The family will receive friends at 2506 W. Sumter St., Florence.
