Obituary

Pastor James Earl Price was born on December 9, 1945 to the late Rena Price Pounds and Arnell Bass in Columbia, MS. He departed this earthly life on Friday, July 5, 2019 at Merit Health Wesley Medical Center in Hattiesburg, MS.

James and his family grew up in the Harmony Community in Columbia, MS. At an early age he joined the Harmony Baptist Church, actively attending Sunday School and Church services, In June of 1968 James was drafted into the United States Army. He served in the 11th Fifth Infantryman. He was stationed in Fort Carson, Colorado and St. Louis, Missouri, and served in Vietnam. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with W/60 Device. He served our country for 2 years. After returning home from the Army he met and married Mary Jean Johnson on March 19, 1970. The two took in several children and raised them in their home as their own, teaching them about the Lord and keeping them in church. James was an outstanding roofer for years; he owned his own business. He did many roofing jobs for businesses far and wide, as well as the people in the community in which he lived. James served as an usher at Harmony Baptist under the leadership of Pastor Avon Rawls, Sr. He was very active in the church and was called to preach in 1986. His first sermon was entitled “Putting on the Whole Armor of God” ~Ephesians 6:10.

He served as an Associate Minister at the Unity Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Leroy Henry and Kennies Fountian. In 1989 James became the Pastor of Rosehill Missionary Baptist Church. He served as their pastor for 30 years, preaching and teaching about Prosperity, Charity, and most of all the Love of God.

Pastor James Price was preceded in death by his mother, Rena Price Pounds; father, Arnell Bass, Sr.; sisters, Helen Price, Gracie Harvey, Juanita Price, and Brenda Price Johnson, and Jerry Bass. He leaves to cherish his memories; his loving wife, Mary Jean Prices of Columbia, MS; sons, Paul Kelly (Marcia) of Grovetown, GA, Donald Richardson of Columbia, MS; daughter, Paula Kelly of Chappell Hill, NC; two sisters, Bobbie Bass of Collins, MS and Josie Coleman (Barry) of Philadelphia, PA; sister-in-law, Jesse L. Averett Barnes of Columbia, MS; brother-in-law, Sidney Johnson (Alma) of Tulsa, OK; four nieces who he raised as his own, Monice Johnson and Melanie Johnson both of Columbia, MS, Jacqueline Johnson of Albany, NY and Mya Norris of Hattiesburg, MS; a special niece and nephew, Jace and Journey Norris; nephew, Maddi Price of Gretna, LA; his loyal dog Lucy; a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends
