Rosa Cathleen Spates Thompson departed her earthly home and entered eternal peace on August 11, 2026, in the comfort of her own home.

Rosa Cathleen Spates Thompson was born February 4, 1952, in Lamar County, Mississippi. The youngest of eleven children, she was lovingly known as “Kitty”.

A gifted student, Rosa advanced early in school and graduated from John Jefferson High School in Purvis, Mississippi in 1969. She went on to earn degrees from Prentiss Institute, Mississippi Valley State University, and the University of Southern Mississippi.

Rosa devoted more than 40 years to education, beginning in Bassfield and later teaching in Lumberton and Columbia. She became a beloved and influential figure in the Columbia School District, known for her dedication, fairness, and commitment to nurturing young minds until her retirement in 2017.
Rooted in faith, Rosa spent 50 years as a devoted member of Truevine Missionary Baptist Church, serving the youth and working as church clerk. She later joined Little Rock Missionary Baptist Church, remaining faithful until her health declined.

Rosa married Bobby Don Thompson in 1981, and together they welcomed one daughter, Ollie Spates Thompson, the joy and center of her life.

She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, one sister, and five brothers. Rosa leaves behind her daughter, 3 sisters, 1 brother, godchildren, 2 bonus children and 3 bonus grandchildren, cherished friends, and a host of loving relatives.

My deepest condolences go out to Ollie and the family. Mrs. Thompson was such a special person to me. She taught me multiple years in school, and I had the privilege of teaching alongside her at JMS. She took such a special interest in me as a student and was so supportive of me as a coworker. I have so many good memories of her and will never forget her. I'm sending my prayers and love to the family.

Celia Roman
