Obituary For MR. DECOSTA SMITH CASH
Mr. Decosta Smith Cash, son of the late Wilbert (Love) Cash Sr. and Ella Hunter Cash, was born on July 23, 1947, in Anson County, North Carolina. He received Christ at an early age at Sandy Ridge Baptist Church of Morven, NC. On September 12, 2026, at Atrium Pineville in Charlotte, God in His infinite wisdom called him home from his earthly labor.
Decosta was united in holy matrimony to Gloria Dixon Cash, and from this union came their children: Corey L. Dixon (Stephanie) of Indian Trail, NC, and Stacy M. Cash of the home. He also shared a special bond with his niece, Italy Henderson, who spent summers and holidays with the family from six months old through eighteen years of age. Decosta is survived by one brother Ellison Cash (Shirley). He was preceded in death by his siblings Wilbert Cash Jr. and Brook Hunter.
Decosta attended and graduated from West Deep Creek School. After graduation, he worked at Anson County Hospital in Wadesboro, NC, and later at CP&L Light Company. His deep love for people and horses led him back to Anson County Hospital, where he continued serving others while spending his spare time riding horses—one of his greatest joys.
A man of initiative and compassion, Decosta later established his own cleaning business, providing employment opportunities to boys and men who struggled to find work. His business served schools, offices, churches, newly built homes, and nursing homes from Wadesboro to the Charlotte area. Guided by his heart for service, he eventually closed the business and began working at Sandhills Group Home, caring for special‑needs adults and children. He later became a Certified Nursing Assistant, continuing his dedication to caregiving while still riding horses on weekends and in his free time.
Decosta never met a stranger. He greeted everyone with kindness; yet, spoke his mind when needed. He cherished his family, his friends, and the many lives he touched along the way.
He leaves to cherish his loving memory: His devoted wife, Gloria Dixon Cash, of the home; His son, Corey L. Dixon (Stephanie), of Indian Trail, NC; His daughter, Stacy M. Cash, of the home; His grandchildren, Jalen Dixon of Chapel Hill, NC, Myla Dixon of Greenville, NC and grand dog, Louie; His brother, Ellison Cash of Deep Creek, NC; His sisters‑in‑law, Vera Rorie of Stone Mountain, GA, and Shirley Cash of Deep Creek, NC; His nieces: Italy Henderson, Carla Nelson, LaToyin Rollins, and Renea Rushing; His nephews: Felix Blakney, Bryan Cash, Kareem Rorie, and Jared Williams.
- A special friend, Damion “Rabbit” Hall, and dear friends Donny Trull, Jodie Davis, Jo Burrus, along with a host of loving family members and cherished friends
Decosta’s legacy of compassion, hard work, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
The Service of Memory will be on Saturday, September 19, 2026, 1:30pm, Smith's Memorial Chapel, 604 Salisbury Street, Wadesboro, North Carolina.

Whenever we think of Decosta (Johnny), we can't help but smile and laugh. To know Decosta as a friend was to never have a dull moment. He loved to laugh, tell jokes and share stories of days gone by. Most of all, he was a friend that you could always count on when you needed him. Gloria, we are lifting you and your family up in prayer as you hold many special memories in your hearts.

So sorry to about Mr. Decosta passing. He was a good person and I worked with him at Anson County Hospital. He always wore a smile and loved to joke around with the patients too. He is going to be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Now, Decosta, didn't you know you were supposed to live forever? I find it hard to believe you were 79 because you had such a young and fun spirit. I remember you picking me up from school, cutting up with my brother and I, helping out at my surprise 21st birthday party, hearing tales of you horseback riding with Mickey, and so many fun memories over the decades. What memories I could share about the horse trails Decosta & I rode together. I think his favorite was Cooper Black in SC. He was ALWAYS so good to me. I seldom had to saddle my own horse. I will miss my old friend even though neither of us could ride anymore. My prayers & condolences go out to Gloria, Stacey & the rest of his family.
