On July 9, 2025, Mr. Eddie William Thomas peacefully accepted his heavenly wings and entered his Father’s presence at the age of 74. He was the firstborn of three children to the late Bernice and Eddie Lee Thomas on October 31, 1950, in Burnsville, North Carolina. Credited to his godly grandparents, Cora and Henry Broadway, Eddie accepted Christ as his personal Savior at an early age and was baptized at the Church of God in Burnsville, North Carolina. He faithfully attended Sunday school and church with his grandparents and sisters.
Later, upon his move to Washington, D.C., he continued to serve the Lord as a member of Mount Calvary Word of Faith Baptist Church for years and was a faithful member until his health no longer allowed him to attend.
Eddie received his formal education in the Anson County public school system. After completing Bowman Senior High School in Wadesboro, North Carolina, he moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, and attended Charlotte Community College. In 1969, he was drafted and proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Credited to his heroic veteran performance, he was recognized as a distinguished recipient of the Purple Heart for his bravery and sacrifice. Additionally, he received numerous National Defense Service Medals, including the Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Service Star, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Combat Infantryman Badge, Sharpshooter (Rifle), Marksman (Pistol), and Sharpshooter (MGM-60). His courage and dedication to his country will always be honored and remembered.
He was known for his strong work ethic, loving spirit, laughter, wisdom, generosity, and unwavering kindness. During many years while working at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Washington, D.C., he touched many lives through his mentorship and volunteer efforts. His memories will live forever and be engraved in the hearts of his loved ones and those whose lives he has touched, because of his compassion and willingness to lend a helping hand whenever and wherever it was needed.
In addition to his parents, Bernice and Eddie Lee, and grandparents Cora and Henry Broadway, and Bessie and Morn Thomas, he was preceded in death by one sister, Lisa Thomas, and one grandchild, Dalvin Watkins. Also, there are many aunts, uncles, and others joyfully awaiting him in heaven.
In the hearts of those remaining, precious thoughts of him will be cherished forever by his loving son, Mr. Derick Medley, Burnsville, North Carolina, two grand children Dorantay Watkins, Derrick Wensil, and five great-grandchildren.; two sisters, Gwendolyn Thomas, The Villages, Florida, and Sharon Thomas James (Anthony), Accokeek, Maryland; one sister/cousin, Dr. Ruby Broadway, New Orleans, Louisiana; two brothers, Reggie Thomas, Washington, D.C. and Reginald Thomas, Lake Arbor, Maryland; two aunts, Mrs. Lucille Covington (Dr. Johnny), The Villages, Florida; Mrs. Betty Broadway, Washington, D.C., and Beau, his companion military dog, along with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
