Obituary For Mr. George M. Powell

On December 14, 1954, George Michael Powell was born to the late George Powell, Jr. and Mary Alice Burns Powell in Winston-Salem, NC. He was reared in the Burnsville Community by his grandmother, the late Ellen Thomas Burns (Mama Jink).

He attended Bowman Senior High School in Wadesboro, NC. He worked at Carolina Truss in Monroe for many years and was a foreman. He also worked at Piedmont Components in Mt. Gilead, NC.

George, Michael, Mike, GP, Homeboy, PumpitUp, O’G, or whatever you may have called him, loved his family, his community and Life. His love was shown in action, deeds and by word of mouth. His words were not “I Love You”, but “Who Loves You?!”. Mike may not have always done what he told you to do, but he always wanted you to be on the right path, be encouraged and know that you were loved. Mike often had an open door, a hot meal and an argument to let you know how much he cared.

Michael, was preceded in death by his parents, grandmother, three brothers: David Bernard Powell, Anthony Jerome Powell and Reginald Leon Powell and a dear nephew: Tony Broadway.

Mike’s Sunday Dinners, Family Gatherings and Front Porch Conversations will leave a void in the Burns family, the Burnsville community and on Race Track Rd. Mike loved people and loved being the life of the party. He loved music and loved to dance. His catch phrases “Pump It Up” and “BAM” were not only his party names but also how so many children remembered him. That along with the fact that he always had some candy or a snack to give them.

George will continue to live in the fond memories of the apple of his eye, his daughter, Anitra Michaela Powell; grandsons: Isaiah Jaquan Powell, Jakobe Jovon McCoy, and Darrion Josiah McCoy and great grandson, Isaiah Jaquan Powell Jr, all of Angier, NC; his only sister, Celestine P. Rucker of Winston-Salem, NC; his paternal aunt, Ida Cathey of Winston Salem, NC; his cousin-siblings, Rachel Burns, Lula & Nelson Jackson, Martin & Diane Colson, Karen Colson, Shirley “Vick” Allen, Keithon Colson and Korie Colson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A special note of love to his “Ride or Die”, his “Uber Driver”, Eddie Ledbetter.

The Homegoing Services will be on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, 2:00pm, Fairview Church of God, Burnsville Community, Polkton, North Carolina. Interment will be in the family plot the Church Cemetery.

The family visitation will be on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 from 1:30-2:00pm at Fairview Church of God, Burnsville Community, Polkton, North Carolina.
