Mr. James Alfred Watson, affectionately known as “Al” to friends and “Alfred” to family, age 77, a native of Pageland, South Carolina, and a resident of Gladys, Virginia, peacefully transitioned from this life on Saturday, April 26, 2025.
Alfred was born on August 3, 1947, in Pageland, the son of the late Fred and Nellie (Alsbrook) Watson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Florence Watson; his siblings, Eleanor Tabor, Doris Banks, Lila Jenkins, Thelma Morgan-Pendergrass, and Larry Watson; and a host of aunts, uncles, nephews, and cousins.
Upon graduation from Petersburg High School, Class of 1965, he began working as a surveyor in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, until he was drafted into the United States Army. Alfred proudly served from 1966 to 1968 as an infantryman stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas. During his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Sharpshooter Badge (Rifle) before receiving an honorable discharge. After his military service, Al relocated to Washington, D.C., where he worked for the Metro Transit Authority. After leaving Metro, he transitioned to a career as a CDL truck driver and become the proud owner of Watson and Watson Trucking Company, performing government contract work on Bolling Air Force Base.
Al was a lifelong member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Pageland. He kept his roots and faith close to his heart no matter where life took him.
Al lived a life full of love, laughter, and fierce independence. If you ever tried to tell him what to do, you quickly found out he was going to do it his way — and somehow make you laugh about it afterward. His stubborn spirit, mixed with humor and kindness, made him unforgettable to everyone he encountered. He enjoyed taking trips to visit family, gathering for cookouts, spending time with loved ones, and indulging in seafood, one of his favorite treats. He loved watching sports, especially cheering for his Washington Commanders and rooting for any team playing against the Dallas Cowboys. He also enjoyed taking his children to Washington Bullets/Wizards games and to the racetrack to bet on horses. Al treasured the lifelong friendships he built over the years and always made time to celebrate the moments that mattered most with those he loved.
Al leaves to cherish his memory his two sons, Alfred-Jamal Watson (Chy) and Teron Watson (Brandy); his beloved grandchildren, Bryson and Kaleb Watson; and the mother of his children, Teresa Poindexter-Brown and step-children, Catina Poindexter-Tims and Jermaine Poindexter. He is also remembered with love by his siblings, Freddie Mae O’Bryant, Gerald Watson (Susie), E’Lois Watson-Thomason, and Carolyn Bennett (Karl); along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who deeply loved him.
The Homegoing Service will be on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at 11:00 AM, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Pageland, South Carolina. Interment with military honors will follow in the family plot of the church cemetery.
The Watson Family will greet family and friends on Saturday, May 10, 2025 from 10:00-11:00 AM at the church prior to the service.
The services will be live-streamed on Facebook via HC Smith Funeral Home.
