Mr. Johnny George Carpenter peacefully departed from this earthly life at his home on Saturday, December 20, 2025.Johnny was born April 10, 1933 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina to the late Veta Burris and Leroy Carpenter Senior. He was one of eight children.
Johnny attended Stanly County schools and proudly served in the United States Army. He married Christine Smith on May 24, 1959, after leaving the military. He was a dedicated father and baseball enthusiast. He pitched for the local Norwood team. Johnny was also an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends. He also enjoyed gardening and loved sharing his harvest with others.
Johnny will be remembered as a “no nonsense” man with a strong sense of community. He was recognized as a Community Hero and presented with a certificate for his love, dedication, and support. He had a strong work ethic and retired from Alco as a supervisor. He possessed an entrepreneur mindset which led to the creation of Big Oak Grocery and other businesses.
Johnny was preceded in death by his wife Christine Carpenter; son Gerald Snuggs; parents Veta and Leroy Senior; sisters Cora Cunningham, Nan Currie, Ethel Richardson and brothers Leroy Carpenter Jr, Clarence Carpenter, Benny Carpenter and Willie Manning.
Johnny will be cherished and forever remembered by daughters Joannie Edringston (Myron) of Garner, NC, Carla Carpenter of Greensboro, NC, Valerie Prince of Albemarle, NC and son Kerry Snuggs (Marcia) of Concord, NC; brother-in-law Earl Smith of Lompoc, CA; ten grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Graveside Services to Honor the Life and Legacy of Mr. Carpenter will be on Saturday, December 27, 2025, 1:00pm, Barringer Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, Norwood, North Carolina.
The Family and Friends viewing will be on Friday, December 26, 2025 from 2:30-3:30pm at Smith's Funeral Home.
