Obituary For MR. MARLON D. JOHNSON
Marlon Derome Johnson was born in Cheraw, South Carolina, to Pastor Derinzer and Josephine Johnson. On September 17, 2026, he entered eternal rest in Charlotte, North Carolina, at the age of 57.
Marlon accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age. He was a member of Galilee AME Zion Church in McFarlan, North Carolina, and attended Marvin AME Zion Church and Wesley Chapel AME Zion Church in Waxhaw. He sang in the choir and remained active in the church. His faith was part of how he lived: he trusted God and remembered the miracles he had witnessed throughout his life.
At Anson Senior High School, Marlon played football, ran track, participated in band, and served in JROTC. After graduating in 1988, he enlisted in the United States Army. He served from 1989 to 1992 and again from 1995 to 1996, with assignments that included Fort Carson, Colorado, and Honolulu, Hawaii. His honors included two Army Achievement Medals, the Army
Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Lapel Button, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, and the Sharpshooter Marksmanship Badge with Rifle and Hand Grenade Bars.
Following his military service, Marlon built a career in logistics as an over-the-road truck driver. For more than 15 years, he worked both as an owner-operator and for other companies. He loved his work with Red Classic/Coca-Cola and had been looking forward to retirement.
Marlon found joy in time with his family. He loved taking his daughter, grandchildren, and nephews to Carolina Panthers and Charlotte Hornets games. He enjoyed the beach, too.
Marlon’s life held many chapters: son, father, grandfather, brother, soldier, and friend. Through them all, he held on to his faith and made time for the people he loved. His family will remember the games they attended together, the days at the beach, and the comfort of having him beside them. Those memories are his lasting gift to them.
Marlon will be remembered for his warmth, his strength, his faith, and the love he gave his family. He leaves to cherish his memory his parents, Pastor Derinzer and Josephine Johnson; his daughter, Kuiston Nikole Johnson; his grandchildren, Kelis Nikole Baker, Kyrie Lakwan Baker, and Miracle Khelani Covington; his sister, Marlana Hill; his nephews, Logan Hill and Peyton Hill; and many other family members and friends.
The Services to Celebrate Marlon's life will be on Sunday, September 27, 2026, 2:00pm, in the Chapel of Smith's Funeral Home, 604 Salisbury Street, Wadesboro, North Carolina.
The public viewing and family vistation on Sunday, September 27, 2026 from 1:30-2:00pm.

We extend our condolence to the Johnson family for the loss of our dear Marlon. Marlon and Marlana spent the mornings and afternoon with my mother and father before and after school. My mother war the community mother and gave care to the children in her neighbor hood.
Marlon used to stay with my parents in the 70 s before and after school. He and his sister would wait for the bus. We were in transit to Germany to meet Joe. They were such sweet children. We would meet up with them when we would. Often meet up with them when we would be on leave from the Army. I am sure the family will miss Marlon. He was such a nice young man. It was a pleasure to have known him in the home of my parents, Elijah and Flora Tillman.
