Mother Mary Crawford Ford, lovingly known as “Mary Anna” was born February 23, 1935 to the late Willie Lee Lomax (Eddie Rufus) and Maxwell Huntley Sr. (Nellie) in Charlotte, North Carolina. Mary Anna entered the Gates of Heaven on October 11, 2022 at her home.
Mary Anna was an overachiever and a very self-disciplined scholar. She graduated from Anson County Training School in 1953 as the Salutatorian of her class.
Mary Anna accepted Christ at an early age at St. Mark Church of God. She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Wadesboro, NC. There she served as the Church Custodian, President of the Usher Board, lead cook, member of FBC Senior Choir, Bell Chorus, Missionary, and the Church Mother. Mary was a devoted servant at First Baptist church until her health declined. Afterward, she was a faithful member of Oak Grove Baptist Church of Harrisburg under their Watch Care Team.
Mary Anna was an active member of her community. She was a member of Love Chapter #26, Order Of The Eastern Star of Morven, NC and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #10403 of Wadesboro, NC. She wore many hats for the people of Anson County and especially for those in the Cedar and Salisbury Street Community. She was known as Ms. Ford and the “Candy Lady.” She was the babysitter and disciplinarian to the entire neighborhood. In an effort to keep the neighborhood kids from crossing the busy highway to go to the local convenience store and to provide affordable meals to those families in need; the “Candy Lady” sold candy, cookies, hotdogs, beverages and ice cream. She used these encounters as an opportunity to teach the neighborhood kids how to count and budget their money, how to use credit, and the importance of paying on time. Ms. Ford will forever be remembered for her infamous hotdogs, and her tough disciplinary stance “Just Do It.”
She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Lee Lomax (Eddie Rufus) and Maxwell Huntley Sr. (Nellie); ex-husband, Alford Lee Ford; son, Charles Crawford; two brothers, Clayton Crawford and Harold Huntley; daughter-in-law, Mary Montgomery Crawford, three granddaughters, ChaRhonda McGriff, Genie “Tai” Dows and Latoya Bennett and spiritual sisters, Mrs. Juanita Medley, Mrs. Doris B Smith and Mrs. M.R. Bell.
She leaves to cherish fond memories her children, Charvetta Ford (of the home), Minister Bernia Jaecksch-Ford (Shauna), Amy Ford, Reverend Paulus Ford (Tonja) and Anne Hubbard; sons-in-law, Ronald McGriff and Walter Twitty; and two bonus daughters, Evadne K. Smith, and Sabronia Dows. Her grandchildren, Cera Smith (Everett), Kimyada Adams (Dereck), Latoya Hubbard, Charlie Jaecksch-Ford, Preston Leak Jr., Tjay Dunlap, Seconda Ford, Santario Berry, Michael Crawford, Jonathan Crawford, Kemberlee Crawford, Shonda Crawford, Christopher Crawford (Shalonda), Ashley Green, Jasmine Ivey, Shaylan Taylor; Adrian Smith, Riki Dows and Destiny Dows; 29 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren.
Her siblings, Charlene McCormick (Lorenzo), Cherelle Casey (Reverend Billy), Maxwell Huntley Jr., and Dennis Huntley; special cousins, Cylathia Borden and Irene Harrington (Maurice); special friends, Margaret Parker White, Queenie Lee (Keith), Hester Spencer (Manzell Sr.), Arethra Escalera, Retha Lindsay (Donnell) and Reno Smith along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The Services to Honor the Life and Legacy of Ms. Ford will be on Friday, October 21, 2022, 2:00pm, First Baptist Church, 722 Sikes Avenue, Wadesboro, North Carolina. Interment will be at Westview Memorial Park, Highway 74-West, Wadesboro, North Carolina.
