Obituary For Reverend J. N. (Jake Newell) Coble

Reverend J. N. Coble loved! He showed us that love is wonderful, because GOD is love. JESUS exhibited love and the HOLY SPIRIT endorses love. It was love that released him from pain, tiredness, and weakness. It was love that ushered him into his eternal residency in the presence of his Almighty GOD.

On February 1, 1943, in Stanly County, NC, God blessed the late Excell and Robena Coble with their fifth son, Jake Newell Coble. He attended the public schools of Stanly County and was a 1962 graduate of Kingsville High School, Albemarle, NC.

His parents took him to Sunday School in Oakboro, NC before he went to grade school. At the age of 14, he dedicated his life to Christ and joined Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in Oakboro, NC. He was later elected to serve on the Trustee Board and became a Deacon. He also served as the Assistant Superintendent of Sunday School and eventually became the Superintendent.

Reverend Coble preached his first sermon at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church on the first Sunday in March 1973. In June of 1973, he was ordained by the Zion Missionary Baptist Association under the leadership of the late Reverend Dr. Asa L. Bell, Sr., Moderator. He continued his education at Shaw School of Divinity in Raleigh, NC.

As a member of the Zion Missionary Baptist Association, Reverend Coble served as the Vice Moderator for 13 years and as Moderator for 5 years. He also served as the Director of Christian Education.

In the Lanes Creek Association, Reverend Coble served in various leadership roles including Moderator, Vice Moderator, Chairman of the Ordination Council, and a member of the Executive Board. He also served as a member of the Executive Board of the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc.

He served as the President of the Union County Baptist Ministers Fellowship from 2010 to 2024.

In 2018, Reverend Coble received the NAACP Humanitarian Award and was honored as Man of the Year. On April 17, 2022, Reverend Coble was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine from North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper for his prestigious public service.

The City of Monroe honored Rev. Coble with a proclamation in recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on January 15, 2024.

Reverend Coble was a forward-thinking preacher and pastor who dedicated fifty-one years to preaching. He relied on the Bible as his compass, dedication as his loyal companion, and faith as his hope in times of uncertainty.

Reverend Coble was dedicated to lifelong learning and championed Christian education, firmly rooted in the Baptist Doctrine. He was unwavering in his commitment to following God's WORD, rather than embracing rapid changes.

Reverend Coble drew upon his deep spiritual reserves to deliver heartfelt eulogies for his cherished mother, devoted wife, beloved brothers, best friend, treasured church members, and other dear family members.

On March 17, 2019, Reverend Coble's heart stopped as he was writing a check for his tithes. However, he was blessed to attend his 41st Pastoral anniversary the following month. He was granted an additional five (5) years to continue the work he was called to do, allowing him to fulfill his Father's WILL for a while longer. Moreover, he had more time to spend with family and friends.

Even as his physical body grew weaker, he stayed focused on Jesus. When asked how he was doing, he would always respond, "I'm trying to live right."

He lived, gave, and served, demonstrating humility, dedication, and perseverance. He delivered his last sermon on August 3, 2024, and attended Mt. Moriah's revival for the following two nights. Despite being limited by illness, tiredness, and weakness, he remained committed to fulfilling the work designated to him by GOD.

He thrived until his heart stopped beating at the command of his Heavenly Father. Behold, God came quickly with Reverend Coble's reward: the reward of eternal rest in the presence of the Trinity. Reverend Coble's sickness was replaced with replenished health, his tiredness was replaced with renewal, and his weakness was replaced with strength.

He has been reunited with his wife of 46 years, Barbara; his parents, Excell and Robena Coble; his brothers, Frank, Ricky, Joe, Ovester, Bennie Ray, and Willie Gene.

He is survived by two sons: Shedrick Coble of Charlotte, NC and Shalaun Coble of the home; two grandsons who were like sons, Shammond Coble of Marshville, NC and his riding partner, Johah Coble; and another grandson, Morgan Harris; one great-grandchild, Wynter Ann Coble, and one beloved sister, Darlene Harris of Oakboro, NC.

He is survived by one brother-in-law, Harold (Lillie) Ledbetter of Polkton, NC; four sisters-in-law, Bettie Coble of Marshville, NC, Dean Coble of Charlotte, NC, Gladys Coble of Raleigh, NC, and Sylvia (Reverend Ernest) Tillman of Polkton, NC; as well as special nieces, nephews, and a host of loving friends.

Reverend Coble firmly believed that the Lord was his light and salvation. Fearless in standing for righteousness, even if it meant standing alone, God was his unwavering strength as he persevered until his assignment was completed.

The Services to Honor the Life and Legacy of Rev. Coble will on Thursday, August 29, 2024, 3:00pm, Mount Moriah Baptist Church, Marshville, Carolina. Interment will be at Oakboro Cemetery, Oakboro, North Carolina.

The Coble Family will greet family and friends on Thursday, August 29, 2024 from 2:30-3:00pm at Mount Moriah Baptist Church.
