Annie L. Miller was born on September 29, 1938, in St. Peterburg, FL to Harry Sr. and Ruby Lee Burney. On December 29, 2025, the Lord called our beloved “Lou Lou” to eternal rest. She received her education in the Pinellas County School System. After graduation from Pinellas High School, she attended nursing school at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, GA, graduating in September of 1959. She also attained a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Leo College in 1988.
She was employed by Morton Plant Hospital (now BayCare) where she was employed for 45 years. She was the first African American registered nurse on staff at Morton Plant Hospital, advanced to head nurse of the I.V. Dept., helped create the Mobile Nursing Unit, and transitioned into the education department. These accomplishments reflected her determination, excellence, quiet strength and vision for the future. She mentored numerous nurses and other health care professionals throughout the years.
Upon her retirement, BayCare established a scholarship in her honor for licensed professional nurses (LPN). This scholarship is for LPN's pursuing further education to become a registered nurse. Quilting became her passion after retiring. She and her sisters started a quilting chapter, "Sisters of Color", at Bethany C.M.E. Church. She was also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
On June 24, 1960, she married Willie S. Miller. Of this union, three children were born. Regina, Allan and Bruce.
She was preceded in death by both parents, her siblings Harry Burney, Jr (Edith), Tyrone Burney (Mary), Noble Burney, Sheddred Burney, Willie Dale Burney, and Gloria Norfleet (Mose).
