Freddie L. Spencer was born on May 12, 1930, in Lovett, Florida. She was the second oldest of eight children born to the late Preston and Willie Mae Edwards. Freddie attended the New Canaan Missionary Church in Lovett, Florida as a child.
The family relocated to Quitman, Georgia in 1949, where she attended Brooks County High School. She moved to Clearwater, Florida in the late 1950’s. Freddie was married to Wheeler James Spencer and remained married until his passing in 2016.
Freddie joined Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in 1958 under the pastorate of the late Reverend Elder Armster. She sang in the adult choir for many years, enjoyed attending Bible study and hosted a small group in her home. She was employed by Mt. Carmel as a member of the cleaning staff in 1993, where she served faithfully and with great joys was working with the kitchen crew at Mt. Carmel. She also took immense pride in decorating the Amos D. Lewis building for various events as part of her role with the Mt. Carmel Beautification Committee. Most importantly she was a devoted Christian mother and grandmother who displayed what it looked like to follow Christ not only on Sunday but in her home as well.
Freddie worked in the housekeeping industry for many years both in private homes and hotels. She later took a different path and became a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Her first position as a CNA was at Bruce Manor Nursing Home where she provided exceptional and compassionate care to the residents. She was well respected by her managers and co-workers for the care she provided.
Freddie departed this life on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at 12:50 a.m. with her daughter, Robin and “Son” (Ray) at her bedside. She was preceded in death by her parents, Preston Sr. and Willie Mae Edwards; daughter, Cheryl Spencer; brothers, Preston Jr., Frank, Abner and James Edwards; and sisters, Odessa Spencer and Liz Edwards.
She leaves to cherish her memory…daughter, Robin Herbert (Ray); grandson, Micah Herbert; sister, Ida Ellis; special friend/sister, Charlotte Bryant; bonus daughters, Linda Prather and Yulonder Scott; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
