ππ Ocean Eyes & Purple Threads ππ
Today I honor my Great Uncle Nathaniel "Man" Golden 07/11/1931β06/12/2026 ποΈπ«
Though he was my paternal grandfather Jessie's uncle, he always felt larger than a title. He was one of those elders whose presence made you feel connected to something deeper than yourself.
He had the most mesmerizing ocean-blue eyes π and even in his 90s carried himself with a grace and debonair spirit that turned heads. It always warmed my heart to look up and see him.
One of the things I will cherish most is that he honored my request to wear purple and white in remembrance of my Daddy and my Grandma Luella. ποΈπποΈ That gesture meant more than words can express. ποΈ
As I reflect on his life, I cannot think of Uncle Nathaniel without also thinking of his brother, Uncle Junior Luther Golden.
Uncle Junior was one of the beloved elders of my childhood, while Uncle Nathaniel carried that love forward into my teenage years and beyond.
Though family records would call them my uncles, my heart knew them differently. Uncle Nathaniel and Uncle Junior carried the warmth, wisdom, and steady presence of great-granddaddies. They were elder pillars in my life, offering the kind of love, protection, and belonging that bridged generations.
In many ways, they became my living connection to a generation that stood just beyond my reach. Through them, I experienced the warmth of an era and the embrace of a lineage that I otherwise would have known only through names on a family tree.
Their love was a cloak, their presence a comfort, and their legacy a purple thread woven through the fabric of our family.
One of the memories I treasure most is seeing my Uncle Nathaniel and Uncle JBall at my Daddy's transition service.
In one of the most difficult moments of my life, they were there.
This was my impression of their essence.
Men of presence. Men of family. Men of love.
And I will forever be grateful.
Both Uncle Nathaniel and Uncle Junior shared the most gorgeous ocean-blue eyes π. To look into those eyes was to feel seen, safe, and loved. Even now, when I think of them, I do not first remember their age. I remember their smiles, their elegance, their kindness, and the warmth that surrounded them.
While I am saddened that I could not be there in person to celebrate my Uncle Nathaniel's life and support my family, my heart is with him today and with all those gathering in his honor.
There is something bittersweet and profound about Uncle Nathaniel's transition occurring on my Grandma Luella's birthday. My heart is heavy, yet grateful. The timing feels like a quiet thread woven between generationsβa reminder that family bonds continue beyond what we can see.
Today I give thanks for his life, his dignity, his kindness, and the love he shared so freely.
Rest well, Uncle Nathaniel.
Give Uncle Junior, my Daddy, and Grandma Luella my love.
The ocean lives in my memories of them nowβvast, enduring, and beautiful. π
And somewhere beyond the horizon, I love the notion my beloved elders are ribbons in the sky ππβforever tied to the family they loved so well.
As one more cherished elder joins the ancestors, I take comfort in knowing that my ancestral team grows stronger still.
Thank you for wrapping me in a cloak of love that time cannot unravel.
