Mother Scherrin Vernithia Maloy Hobbs
Scherrin Maloy Hobbs was born on April 5, 1944 in Safety Harbor, Florida to the union of the late Nelson and Clemmie Maloy. She received Christ at an early age under the ministry of Emmanuel Tabernacle Baptist Church of the Apostolic Faith in Safety Harbor on Elm Street. In 1994, under the leadership of Bishop James E. Byrd Sr. at the Christ Church of Universal Love, Largo, FL; she rededicated her life back to Christ. Under this ministry,she has served as the Church mother for over 20 years, establishing a Mother’s Board known as the Mother’s Helpers. She was a member of Choir number one and was a licensed Bible study teacher.
She was educated in the Pinellas County School system and graduated from Pinellas High School, Class of ’61. She also received a certificate in Early Childhood Education specializing in special needs children from PTEC. In her earlier years, she was a member of the NAACP, Biracial Committee, and was extremely active in the community. She was a 4-H Leader (Harbor-A-Long), along with her late husband, Lenton, in Safety Harbor for more than ten years. In this capacity, she afforded the youth of the community: camping trips, pottery classes, and public speaking lessons. In her spare time, she enjoyed being the family historian doing Ancestry.com research and baking the Famous Mother Reed pound cake.
She was preceded in death by her late husband, Lenton Hobbs, Sr. (d.12/2002), sisters,Gloria Richardson (d.12/2003) and Stephanie Byrd (Ezekiel) (d.1/2021), her son, Dana McCray (d.6/2021) and two grandchildren, Raphael Nelson Green (d.1/1990) and De’Johndria Marylee Rowe (d.10/2002).
She leaves to cherish her memories… Sister and Brother: Gwen Maloy and Stephen Maloy (Sandy) Sons: Derek McCray (Darlene), Bernard Hobbs (Sherie) Daughters: Diedra Blunt (Lloyd), Pamela Hobbs, DeAnna Alexander (Landry), Clemmye Barnes (Adolphus) Eight Grandchildren: Tyrone Faison, Marquita Aarons (Carl), Denika McCray, Nyeka Lee, Derek Keon Calloway (Asia), Charles Rowe (Tiana), Danielle Alexander, and Jayce Hobbs Six Great grandchildren: David Martinez, Kamiah Miller, Wallace Foster, III, Andrew Calloway, Messiah Rowe and Demarri Rowe One great-great grandchild: Ah’laya Martinez Two Godchildren: Tiara Jones and Amber Thomas And a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends
A Celebration of Life will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, June 24, 2023 with Visitation from 10:00 until service starts, all at Christ Church of Universal Love 11699-130th Avenue No., Largo, FL 33778. Entrusted Care To Smith-Young Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
