Caldonia “Cal” Bird transitioned from this life on February 7, 2024, four days short of her 94th birthday, at her home surrounded by family who adored her.
She was born in Brunswick, GA on February 11, 1930 to the late Lucious and Thelma Harmon. Her younger brother and only sibling, Lucious Harmon, Jr. preceded her in death.
Caldonia moved to Waycross, GA in the 1940’s and attended Center High School. She met and married Jack Bird, Sr., and to this union eight children were born. Two of her children, Steven and Eugene (Glenda), and grandson, Trajan, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband and six children: Jack, Jr. (Emma), Rosemary (Kent), Garsceer (Hycinth), Felicia, Lionel and Matthew (Antoinette). Cal’s family is her legacy. She leaves behind a treasure of (22) grandchildren including her grandson Phillip who lived with her until his high school graduation; (35) great grandchildren; (7) great-great grandchildren and (1) nephew.
Caldonia dedicated her life to caring for her family and plants. She took her calling as a “Virtuous Woman” seriously. Even in her later years of life, she cared meticulously for her grandchildren at her home and often traveled across the US to assist her children and grands when needed. Caldonia’s energy and zest for life were admirable, and her smile and whitty, cunning jokes were infectious. She was a respected elder in the community who had an open-door policy for anyone who stopped in for a listening ear, and of course, sound advice. Caldonia was truly a busy lady and could walk circles around anyone who dared. She had a love for music, dance and travel.
She retired from the Goldkist Pecan Factory and continued working for RESA Child Development Center where she devoted many years to nurturing young children. Throughout her declining years of life, Caldonia was impeccably cared for by her children, Lionel, Felicia and Garsceer, in addition to her husband Jack Bird, Sr., which is a testament to her role as a loving wife and mother. Though she outlived many of her familiar generation of family and devoted special friends, those of us who are left behind will forever celebrate our mother, grandmother and friend.
Public viewing will be held on Monday, February 12th from 5:00-7:00 p.m at Light of the World Ministries.
Graveside service will be held on Tuesday, February 13, 2024 in Hazzard Hill Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. Please keep the family lifted up in your prayers during this difficult time.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Southview Mortuary Inc.

My deepest condolences to the Bird family
So many memories and all filled with love and joy. She was my other mother and probably was to many, she had enough love to go around. My prayers and condolences for her immediate and extended family. Love my "Aunt Cal". ❤️🙏🏼🌺
On behalf of the Jeannie (Lott) Borden Family, we offer our condolences. Momma Cal, may you now rest in heavenly peace. You will always be remembered as my 2nd Mom. As my Mom's Best Friend and Confidante, your home was my home, your family was my family, and your Stevie was my Stevie. Living just a few steps away made it easy to come and go as a child and feel the love of two sets of family members. You always had a jovial spirit and always wore a big smile even when you were fussing at the two of us for our childhood shenanigans. Being in this world for many decades now, I know the value of having a loving family and the rare opportunity to go thru life with a trusting best friend that truly knows you and love you like a Sister. I saw this rare connection between Caldonia and Doris and therefore, I do not mourn for you, but REJOICE! For I know in my heart that you are with your long lost family and friends in Heaven and they are so very happy to connect with you once again. For those of us remaining on this earth, I offer a prayer of solace and peace. May your memories and loving moments of Momma Cal remain forever. God Bless. Your Sister from another Mother, Jeannie
