Joseph S. Shambley was born on April 18, 1934 to the late John Selmon Shambley and Elizabeth Tyner Shambley, and was the second of four children.
Joseph was born and raised in Suffolk, Virginia where he attended the Suffolk Virginia School System. During his high school years, he played football, basketball, and baseball. He began working at Obici Hospital in 1950 and Portsmouth General Hospital in the 1960's as an orderly, and then the Columbia Yacht Company as a painter. He remained at the yacht company until moving to New Jersey in 1967, where he worked at Ulrichsen Boat Company in Marlboro New Jersey. He then took on a job at Marlboro Psychiatric hospital as a nursing assistant, until the facility closed in 1998, the year he retired.
During his time in New Jersey, on December 17, 1977, Joseph became a member of the Keystone Masonic Lodge #52 under the M. W. Athenian Grand Lodge A.F.& A.M.and on January 2, 1978, he became a member of Eureka #8 of the Royal Arch Masons.
in 2016, Joseph returned to Portsmouth, Virginia and became a faithful member at First Baptist Church Taylorsville.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Earnestine Rayner; a brother, Allen Shambley; three wives, Ethelyn, Delores, and Althea; two daughters, Crystal Shambley and Althea "Noel" Broughton.
He leaves to cherish his memories four sons; Dwight Ford (Helen), Dexter Shambley, Rodrick Shambley (Uta) and Bryant Johnson; four daughters, Selma Morris (Vernon), Sybil Triplett (Johnny), Ada Valentin and Tara Lussier (Oden); three step children, Gwendolyn Thomas, Cynthia Jeffries (Anthony) and Stephen Gripper (Iris); his sister, Madie G. Jones, a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and family friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 9,2021 at 1:00pm in the Steele-Bullock Funeral Home Chapel.
