Barbara E. Pembamoto

Barbara E. Pembamoto (Gillis) departed this life and entered into eternal rest on July 13, 2022, in West Palm Beach, Florida.# Barbara was born in White Stone, Virginia and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. She is preceded in death by her parents, George and Rosa Lee Gillis, mother and father-in-law, Pastor Paul and Mrs. Lorna Pembamoto, sister, Annette Cottman, aunts, Nannie O Smith and Altomease Pinkard, uncle, William K. Fitzgerald, brother-in-law, Danny Davis, and son-in-law, Lt. Col. Clayton T. Carter.

Barbara professed Christ at an early age at St. Paul Methodist Church in Whitestone, Virginia. She served with her family in every church to which she belonged. These included starting the youth choir and participating in the Women’s ministry at Eastern United Methodist Church (Baltimore, Maryland), serving in the hospitality ministry, teaching and serving in the Stephen’s Ministry Celebration Church (Long Reach Church of God, Columbia, Maryland),and teaching new members’ classes at ChristEvangelical Baptist Church. As a founding member of Revival Church of God, Riviera Beach, Florida, she taught new members’ classes, children church and participated in the Sister to Sister ministry.#Barbara was a strong prayer warrior walking in the favor of God and was a part of the Saturday morning intercessory prayer team.

As a child, she grew to love the field of medicine. After graduating from Paul Laurance Dunbar High School, she began her professional life as a nurse graduating from the nursing program at the Medical College of Virginia. Always looking to the future and helping to make her community and the world a better place, Barbara completed a bachelor’s degree in Business Management while working for the state of Maryland as a budget analyst. She built a career in computer science and information systems management with the state of Maryland ultimately retiring from Maryland National Bank as a Vice President. Throughout her career, she received numerous recognitions and awards for her outstanding contributions to business process improvements including recognition by the state of Maryland’s comptroller for#designing and implementing a timesaving program for systems developers.

Barbara began a second career working in the mission fields at homeand abroad helping to build community health programs, teaching English as a second language, and winning souls for Jesus Christ. She was a vibrant witness of the saving grace of Christ and shared the gospel wherever she went. She found joy in serving her family, church community,and friends locally and worldwide. Barbara served on numerous boards and volunteer committees including#the Board of the Aging Resource Center of Palm Beach and the Treasure Coast, Take Stock in Children, andRiviera Beach Community Outreach.#She faithfully attended the Keuka Christian Ashram in Keuka, New York with her family and was a member ofits board for several years.

Barbara loved celebrating the accomplishments of her family, friends,and those she served. She would travel anywhere to help or celebrate with family and friends from California to Massachusetts, to Maryland, Ohio, Virginia, Georgia, or the Democratic Republic of the Congo, she would be there to cheer for you. Her greatest joy was serving the Lord by serving people.

Barbara departed this life on July 13, 2022.# She is survived by her beloved husband, Dr. Kenneth Kiluba Pembamoto; devoted children, Dr. Karen Wheel Carter, David Pembamoto, and Pauline Pembamoto; granddaughter, S. Denise Brookins and grand- son, Mamadou Bah; sisters and brothers, Howard James (Irene) Gillis, Rosa Lee Gillis, Ronald Gillis, Trudy Davis, Marilyn (Ralph) Davis and Deborah (Moses) Landrum III; brothers and sisters in love, Mutaba Samuel Pembamoto (Madas), Ruth Pembamoto, Matthew Pembamoto (Choudelle), Marc Pembamoto, Marina Pembamoto (Michel), Mery Pembamoto (Maxime), Elie Pembamoto, a hostof nieces and nephews; Deanna (Bobby) Woods, Michael (Rose) Grimes, Dawn (Linford) Coote, Alika (Isaac) Redd, Anthony M. Johnson, Ieesha Gillis, Jameeka Gillis, Moses Landrum IV, Philip Landrum, and Aaron Landrum, and a host of devoted cousins and friends.
