Obituary For Freddie Lee Sirmans, Sr.

Freddie Lee Sirmans, Sr. was born on December 22, 1942, in Stockton, Georgia, to the late Charlie Sirmans and Alberta Leona Corbin Sirmans. Freddie’s life was marked by unwavering service, a strong work ethic, quiet wisdom, and a generous spirit. Above all, he cherished his family and was deeply devoted to his community, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him.

At the age of fourteen, Freddie moved with his family to 717 Cummings Street in Valdosta, Georgia, where he attended Pinevale High School and graduated in 1961. During his school years, Freddie was known for his athletic talent, particularly in basketball. His skill on the court earned him a scholarship offer after graduation, but he chose instead to answer a higher calling by serving his country in the United States Air Force.

Freddie proudly served four years in the United States Air Force, where he earned certifications in Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting. After completing his military service, Freddie returned to Valdosta, Georgia, and continued his career at Moody Air Force Base Fire Department. His sons fondly recall visiting the fire station as children and hearing their father proudly share that he could drive every fire apparatus in the bay, including the specialized vehicles stationed at Moody Air Force Base. He faithfully served as a Fireman for more than thirty years before retiring.

He was married to Carolyn Laverne Cunningham and from that union four children were born.

Freddie was a devoted father who loved being present for his children. He could often be seen driving them to the skating rink or picking them up from the Boys & Girls Club. Though his children sometimes preferred to be dropped off nearby so their friends would not tease them about his older-model vehicles, those memories became part of the love, humor, and character that defined their childhood with him.

As a father and grandfather, Freddie believed strongly in teaching responsibility and accountability. He wanted his children and grandchildren to understand the importance of their actions, their choices, and the values that would carry them through life.

Freddie was also a father figure to many children in the neighborhood. He always had words of wisdom, guidance, or advice for the young people in Woodgate. He repaired bicycles, helped wherever he was needed, and even built a homemade basketball goal in the backyard using two long two-by-fours, a large piece of plywood, and a rim placed between two pine trees. Many who spent time on that backyard basketball court will remember the joy and community he helped create.

In his own words, Freddie was a “self-taught handyman.” If someone needed him, he would be there—and on time. He may have offered a long lecture along the way, but he was dependable, generous, and willing to help. If he charged anything at all, it was never much. Freddie believed in the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” He was a giver, a trustworthy man, and, above all, a man of great integrity.

Freddie was also a self-published author and writer. His love for writing began with letters to the editor of the Valdosta Daily Times and grew into the publication of multiple books and autobiographical works. He dedicated his writings and books to his grandchildren and even created a publishing company, Zaporia Press, that honored them by including their names throughout the company’s identity.

He was known for faithfully sending greeting cards for holidays and special occasions, ensuring those he cared about felt remembered.

On June 16, 2026, Freddie Sr. peacefully transitioned from labor to reward, entering into eternal rest.

Freddie Sr. was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Alberta Sirmans; two brothers, Elder Marvin E. Sirmans and Walter Bernard “Rip” Sirmans; and three sisters, Betty G. Williams, Joyce Marshall and Millie Coleman.

He is survived by his four children, Felicia Regina Sirmans Cunningham, Freddie Lee Sirmans Jr., Hoover Charles Sirmans Sr., and Erica Laverne Sirmans; nine Grandchildren, who were the joy of his life, Zaporia Bass, Hoover Sirmans Jr. (Ryann), Felecia Sirmans, Freddie Sirmans III, Ayana Sirmans-Fellows, Amari Sirmans, Tommy Sirmans, Cameron Sirmans, and Julia Sirmans; one special great-grandchild, Christian “CP” Hand; two brothers, Buie C. Sirmans (Nora) and Jimmy C. Sirmans (Jordel); seven sisters, Mary A. Myers, Hazel McDowell, Annie Roberts, Henrietta Anderson, Ruth Ann Phillips, Cynthia Price and Mary Walker; one sister-in-law, Surdelta Sirmans; Shayla Sirmans and Jody Parker who will forever hold a special place in the family, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends whom he loved and cared for deeply.

One of Freddie’s favorite sayings was, “May the work I’ve done speak for me.” These words reflected the way he lived. Freddie was not boisterous, demonstrative, or flamboyant. He spoke softly, yet his words carried great weight. He believed in allowing his actions to speak louder than his words, and that belief was shown through countless acts of kindness over many years toward family, friends, neighbors, and all who were blessed to know him.

Freddie Lee Sirmans, Sr. will be remembered for his quiet strength, faithful service, giving heart, practical wisdom, and unwavering love for his family. His life’s work, his kindness, and the many lives he touched will continue to speak for him for generations to come.

The celebration of life service will be held Sunday, June 28, 2026 at 2:00 P.M. at Morning Star Baptist Church, 1051 Howell Road, Valdosta, GA 31601. Reverend Naamen Hooker, pastor, Bishop-Elect Keith Hall, Eulogist.

The burial will take place on Tuesday, June 30, 2026 at 9:30 A.M. at the Georgia National Cemetery, 1080 Scott Hudgens Drive, Canton, GA 30114.

Public viewing will be held Saturday, June 27, 2026 from 10:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
