Retired MSGT Chester Wright (USA) was born May 1, 1934 to the late Selma Wright and Ethel Cooper.
Chester was raised in the Jones Community. He attended St. Phillip Primary School and graduated from Dasher High School. After graduating, Chester answered the call of service for his country by enlisting in the United States Army and served proudly for 27 years and retired as a Master Sergeant. Chester was a Vietnam Veteran and received several medals and certificates for his dedicated service to his country. Chester was a lifetime member of the American Veterans Association (AMVETS) where he served as the local and state Commander. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #13 and was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).
After retirement, Chester continued to serve his community. He was a Steward at St. Phillip A.M.E. Church (currently St. Phillip Jones Community Bible Church) where he served faithfully until his death. Chester was a dedicated employee at Stevens Funeral Home serving as the hearse driver.
On Sunday, January 12, 2025 at South Georgia Medical Center, Chester received his final flight call and transitioned from his earthly labor to rest.
Chester is preceded in death by his parents, Selma Wright and Ethel Cooper; one brother, Joseph Benjamin Howell.
Chester leaves to cherish his memory one son, Alton T. Wright, Sr. (Darlene) of Houston, TX; two grandsons, Alton T. Wright, II and Chester D. Wright; one great granddaughter, Dream Angel Ka’Imi Wright; one sister-in-law, Evelyn Howell of Valdosta, GA; one niece, Lynanda Lynn Howell; one nephew, Jospeh D. Howell (Bridgette); a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
The celebration of life will be held Saturday, January 25, 2025 at 3:00 P.M. at Morning Star Baptist Church, 1051 Howell Road, Valdosta, GA 31601. Rev. Naamen Hooker, pastor, Dr. William C. Morgan, officiating. Burial will follow in the Pallbearers Cemetery.
Public Viewing will be held Friday, January 24, 2025 from 2:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
The celebration of life service will be live streamed on the funeral home Facebook and YouTube Page (Stevens Funeral Home - Valdosta, GA).
