Dorris Jean Thompkins was born February 1, 1958 to the late Freddie Lee and Mattie Aikens Thompkins.
A Time to Worship Deaconess Dorris Thompkins’s faithful devotion to the Lord began at a very young age. She was baptized into the body of Christ and served tirelessly while a member at The House of God Church Keith Dominion in Nankin, Georgia and Valdosta, Georgia. Her eagerness to see the church grow motivated her to serve in any capacity needed. Her service included Sunday School teacher, usher, missionary, praise leader, church custodian, Vacation Bible School coordinator, Youth Department directress, State Diocese Security and committee member for numerous special programs and celebrations for the church.
A Time to be Educated She matriculated through the Brooks County School System and was a member of the Class of 1976. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice in 1981 from Valdosta State College. She returned to Valdosta State College and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Legal Assistance in 1995.
A Time to Serve Deputy Dorris Thompkins established a legacy of service to her community in law enforcement. During her 20 year career with Valdosta State University she served as Campus Officer.
A time to every purpose under the heaven She devoted the next 20 years of her career to the Brooks County Sheriff Department in the capacity of Sheriff Deputy and School Resource Officer. Her service to the community extended through her affiliations with Family Connections, Brooks County Drug Awareness, Bethel Community Center and Brooks County Family and Children Services. She served as President of the Mu Iota Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta, Inc. for several years.
A Time to Die Dorris Jean Thompkins, this good and faithful servant, answered the Lord’s call from this earthly labor to heavenly rest September 3, 2020.
A Time to Mourn She leaves to cherish her loving memories four siblings: Freddie Lee Thompkins, Jr. of Tallahassee, FL; Dorothy Thompkins of Quitman, GA; Frank (Mary) Thompkins, Sr. of Quitman, GA and Leroy (Lola) Thompkins of Quincy, FL; three siblings preceded her in death: Major S. Thompkins, Mary Lee Thompkins and Morris Thompkins; an adopted son: Anthony Shaw; a goddaughter: Lameisha Nichelle Flemings and her nieces and nephews: Charlene, Michael, Regeana (Robert), Erselar (Randall), Melissa, Tangela, Frank Jr., Timothy, Cynthia, Stacy, Kathy, Lori (Robert), Whitney, Wanda, Lamar, Ledonta and Leondra. Her presence will be missed by her host of great and great great nieces and nephews, cousins, church family, Zeta Phi Beta Sorors, Soul Sisters, co-workers and friends.
A private celebration of life will be Sunday, September 13, 2020 at 10AM. Visitation will be Saturday at the Stevens-McGhee Chapel from 3PM-7PM. I knew Dorris when were in college together at Valdosta State College, as it was then. We had many classes together. She was warm, funny and caring. It is partly because of her that I later became a Zeta.
Deputy you always gave me good solid advice and embraced me during my time in Brooks. My heart breaks knowing I lost contact and now your gone.
