Obituary For John Spencer

A Time to Be Born: Mr. John H. Spencer was born on November 29, 1937 in Dixie, GA to the late William “Bud” Spencer and Alice (Davis) Spencer. At an early age, he became a member of Simmon Hill M.B. Church in Dixie, GA. John was the second oldest of eight children born from this union. John was preceded in death by a brother, Paul E. Spencer; a sister, Alice Mae Hearn, and his daughter, Sheila Bernadette (Spencer) Smith.

A Time to Every Purpose Under the Heaven: John received his education from Brooks County Training School in Dixie, GA and he graduated in 1957. He was a member of the basketball team, HI-Y (YMCA), and the National Institute for Farmers of America (NIFA). John moved to Miami, FL in 1958 in search of a better life. He was determined to move forward in his life and therefore worked several jobs: car washer, photo lab, and construction work providing for his family. In the early 1960’s, he was employed as a car washer at National Car Rental at Miami International Airport, Miami, FL. He gradually advanced to a managerial position and gained great respect and praise from his co-workers and customers. He was proud of his career and it showed in his work ethics which he passed on to his children. “Show pride in what you do and what you do will show its pride in you.” John retired from National Car Rental in 1998 after working over 30 years and then he returned to the country in Dixie, GA to enjoy his retirement. He enjoyed fishing, gospel and country music, the Miami Dolphins football games and singing in the men’s choir at Simmon Hill M.B. Church until his health failed.

A Time to Love: John met and married Madaleen (Cody) Spencer on August 12, 1961 and from this union they were blessed with four children. John was a loving, yet a stern family man especially when it came to his children. He was short in statue but tall in respect.

A Time to Rest: On November 12, 2022, John heard the voice of Jesus say, “Come and take your rest, lay down thy weary one, lay down thy head upon my breast.” He came to Jesus as he was weary, wounded and sad, he found in him a resting place and He made him glad.

A Time to Mourn: John leaves to cherish his memories: Two daughters Brenda (Cody) Brooks of Valdosta, GA; Linda Spencer of Miramar, FL; one son, Dr. Napoleon Spencer of Ponte Vedra, FL; two brothers: James Spencer (Karen) of Dixie, GA and William “Cleve” Spencer, Jr. (Annette) of Miami, FL; three sisters: Marilyn Grant (James) of Valdosta, GA; Edna Robinson (Perry) of Valdosta, GA, and Teresa Scruggs of Dixie, GA; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews and nieces, cousins, and friends.

A celebration of life will be Saturday, November 19, 2022 at 10AM at the Spencer Family Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday the Stevens-McGhee chapel from 4PM-7PM.
