Obituary For Martha Jenkins Wilson
Our beloved Martha Jenkins Wilson was born in Lenox, Georgia on October 24, 1946, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Jessie and Rosa Lee Weathers Jenkins. Martha and her twin sister Mary were the youngest girls of 14 children, all who preceded her in death. As a child, Martha professed God as her Lord and Savior and united with the New Jerusalem Baptist Church. With her family, she attended Sunday School, sang in the choir, and learned the love of Jesus.
Martha attended the Cook County Training School graduating in 1966. She believed in hard work, a trait her parents instilled in her. After her graduation she worked at C&D Sportswear as a seamstress and then went on to work at Nashville Textile, also known as the Sewing Factory, highlighting the sewing ability inherited by her momma. After a number of years at the Sewing Factory, Martha went on to work at Amoco Fabrics until her retirement in 2002.
Once she retired, Martha threw herself into volunteer work. One of favorite volunteer positions was working with the elderly at the Sparks Senior Citizens Center until her health began to fail.She continued on with assisting voters at the Sparks City Hall with voting. Next, she began working in the church, going back to her roots. In her adult life she united with Mt. Moriah and sang in the choir. Needing to assist her ailing mother, she reunited with New Jerusalem, and lead devotion, sang in the choir, ushered, and helped with food preparation. Soon after her mother’s death, Martha joined her husband and united with Rose Hill Missionary Baptist Church where she continued to work in the church.
On February 14, 1967, Martha married Samuel Wilson after they met on the school bus. They remined married for 58 years and during this union 4 boys were born. Samuel Burl, Stanley Tyrone (deceased), Jerrold Brent (deceased), and Phil Rodney.
Martha’s favorite pastime was cooking. During the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons, she was frequently baking cakes for others to enjoy. She is well known for her Red Velvet Cakes and peanut brittle candy. While these were her staples, she was also a very talented cook, hosting many family gatherings and catering them.
Martha’s legacy continues with her loving husband of 58 years, Samuel, two sons, Samuel Burl Wilson (Nakiuma); and Phil Wilson; one granddaughter, Christian Wilson and three greatgrand sons, Isaiah Diggs, Aiden Daniels, and Seth Leslie all of Chesapeake, Virginia. She also leaves to mourn several god children including Faith Williams, Naomi Williams, Ashley Covington, and Samantha Hill. As the last remaining sibling of 14, Martha became a mother figure to many of her host of nieces and nephews. She was also known as a great friend, neighbor, church member, and civic activist.
Visitation will be Saturday, April 19. 2025 at Cottrell Chapel CME Church in Sparks, GA, from 10AM to 11AM.
A celebration of life will be Saturday, April 19, 2025 at 11AM at Cottrell Chapel C.M.E. Church. Burial will follow at the Sparks City Cemetery. Visit this website or our Stevens-McGhee Funeral Home Facebook page to view a livestream of the celebration.

Hey grandma Martha. It's your great grandson just wanted to say that I have really missed you and loved you dearly, it will never stop either. Just know that I'll always be thinking of you . Wish you didn't have to go, but the pain you were in was to much. You sure were a good grandma and a strong woman. I'll never forget all the good things you did for me. I love you and wish that you have a good time in heaven. I'm glad i got to spend 11 years of my life with you.
