Obituary For Mrs. Mary Wright-Stephens

A Time to be Born:

Mrs. Mary Alzine Wright-Stephens was born July 18, 1928, in Dixie, Georgia, to the late James (Son) Wright and Leola (Georgia) Mackey-Wright. Mrs. Mary Wright-Stephens was naturally smart, condent, and had a witty sense of humor, which propelled her to achieve high levels of success throughout life. She was educated in Brooks County, Georgia. After completing high school, she attended Fort Valley State College and earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree in Vocational Home Economics.

Mary continued her post-secondary education at New York University, where she earned a Master’s Degree in Home Economics and earned eighteen hours of credits towards a Doctorate Degree. While pursuing her post-secondary education, she joined the sisterhood of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, which strengthened her desire to support public service. Mrs. Stephens taught both Junior and Senior High School Home Economics prior to her retirement. She taught for thirty-nine years; three in Thomas and thirty-six in Brooks County.

A Time to Love:

On June 11, 1955, Mary Alzine Wright married Ferris Lee Stephens. Their union exemplified a loving and caring marriage. During their over sixty years of marriage, they travelled extensively throughout the world. Mary Wright-Stephens loved Ferris, her family, and people, as Jesus commanded in John 13:34: “A new commandment I give unto you, at ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.”

A Time to Sow:

As a resident of Brooks County, Mary Alzine Wright-Stephens was a devoted wife. She was a hard worker and very career oriented. She taught, tutored, and mentored thousands of children in the Brooks and Thomas County School Systems. Her former students who often visited her amplified the number of lives she touched during her teaching career. Mary had a generous and giving spirit.

A Time to Speak:

At the age of twelve, Mary Alzine Wright was Baptized into Beulah Hill Baptist Church in Dixie, Georgia. After receiving Christ as her Lord and Savior, she played the piano and served as secretary of the Sunday School where her Mother, Leola Mackey Wright, was the Sunday School Teacher under Reverend I. E. Washington. Mary was dedicated to Beulah Hill Baptist Church’s improvement and advancement to become the Church it is today. She organized numerous campaigns to make Beulah Hill a better place to worship. Proverbs 22:6: “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from lt.”

A Time to Weep:

Preceding Mary Alzine Wright-Stephens in death are her husband, Ferris Lee Stephens; one sister, Julia Bell Wright-Bass; and four brothers, Weadom, Wesley, James, and Russell Wright, Sr.

A Time to Transition:

Mary Alzine Wright-Stephens lived in Quitman, Georgia, and was called home to eternal rest on Sunday, December 17, 2023.

A Time to Mourn:

Mary Alzine Wright-Stephens leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memories: the children of her siblings, (Weadom) George, James Wilbur, Patricia, Danny, (Wesley) Herbert, (Julia) Pauline, Wallace, Brendal, (James) Mary Ann, Bobby, Shelia, Bernadette, Pamela, Deborah, James Earl, Daniel, (Russell, Sr.) Russell, Jr., Melvin, Anjalonette, Jeanetha, Larry, Leola, Cynthia, and Wanda; a dedicated sister-in-law and nephew, Bernadine and Kenneth(Evelyn); along with a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation will be Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at the Stevens-McGhee Chapel from 4PM-7PM.

A celebration of life will be Thursday, December 28, 2023 at 11AM at Beulah Hill MB Church with Rev. Alonza Fudge, officiating. Burial will follow in North End Cemetery. Visit this website or our Stevens-McGhee Funeral Home Facebook page to view a livestream of the celebration.
