Obituary For Sister Irma Bryant

Sister Irma Ruth Golden Bryant was the third child born to Corine Golden on November 26, 1919, in Brooks County, Georgia. She, along with all of her siblings, became a member of Beulah Missionary Baptist Church at a very early age. While some of her siblings moved away, Irma maintained her membership at Beulah throughout her lifetime.

As an active member, she served on many church auxiliaries as a member and officer. For many years, she was church treasurer and a member of the usher board until failing health limited her participation. Irma received her formative education in the Quitman, Brooks County, school system. Later, she attended beautician school in Savannah, Georgia, earning her state license in addition. She took other courses to improve her proficiency in communication skills which included typing. Eventually, she opened her own beauty salon at her mother’s home. She was also a domestic worker for a long period of time with the family of Lawyer Bennet of Quitman.

Irma married Albert Bryant on May 9, 1938. This union endured for almost 57 years, ending with his death.

On March 5, 1957, she became a lifelong member of the Order of the Eastern Star; LoveJoy Chapter #246. The walls of her home are lined with certificates and plaques in testimony of her service and contributions to the Order and her church as a member and as an officer. Sister Bryant lived a full life of service and love, especially towards her siblings, mother, nieces, nephews, and others. Many praised her for her cooking skills, especially the delicious cakes she baked. Out of necessity, Sister Bryant spent her last few years as a patient at the Presbyterian Nursing Home in Quitman until her demise.

Her spirit left it’s earthly home on Friday, May 12, 2023. She was preceded in death by her loving mother, Corine, and four sisters, Lillie Mae (General), Rachel (Jesse), Mable (Mel), and Louise G. Anthony (Weed).

Family members left to cherish and perpetuate her memory include: sister, Mrs. Lenore D. Shackelford; nieces, Barbara Clements and Sharon Peele; nephews, George Tate, Godfrey Thomas, Herman Tate, and members of their families; and other family members, relatives, and friends that will miss her deeply.

Visitation will be Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at the Stevens-McGhee chapel from 6PM-7PM.
