Obituary For James "Neville" Rolle

The world was transformed on August 9, 1941, when a bouncing baby boy made his grand entrance on the settlement of Black Point, South Andros. His cries broke the silence on that summer night proclaiming his arrival. His parents, Isaac and Olean Rolle, were overjoyed at the birth of their last child whom they named James. He was affectionately called “Neville”.

Daddy was educated at the Kemps Bay All-Age School, South Andros, where he excelled in his studies, but left at an early age to seek employment in Nassau and to find a better way of life. He worked in the building construction industry for several years, but his thirst for success was not quenched, so he moved to the United States to work on “the contract”. Initially, he resided with his brother, Simeon, who helped to rear him. This opportunity allowed him to realize his full potential; he was able to establish himself and remained in the United States up to the time of his demise.

Daddy was raised in a Christian home and taught in the ways of the Lord. He attended the church in South Andros and later the Grants Town SDA Church (Nassau) and the Macedonia SDA Church (Fort Pierce, FL). He was an articulate expounder of the Bible and would challenge anyone on the scriptures.

Daddy was a giant of a man. He possessed many skills and trades. We believed he could do anything. He was jovial, but no nonsense, and sweet. He was strong-willed and loving. He was a hardworking man, a protector, teacher, fisherman, builder and provider. We could recall visiting the job sites and watching Daddy as he worked on multi-story buildings, some as tall as fifteen stories high. He also left his legacy working as part of a special crew commissioned to construct the Sir Lynden Pindling Airport in Nassau.

Daddy knew how to love. In fact, he was married twice. In his youth, he stole the heart of an Androsian princess, Ettamae Rahming and they were married in February of 1962. From that union, he was honoured to father five children, two of whom predeceased him. Daddy and Ettamae’s marriage came to an end after many noteworthy accomplishments, and they remained friends until the end. Daddy later met and married another beautiful woman, Lucy Phillips. This union was blessed with one child, however Lucy became mother to all of Daddy’s children and nurtured and cared for them alongside Daddy. Aside from working arduously, Daddy also knew how to have fun. He believed in family and spent quality time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Among his favorite pastimes were going to the Jetty or the beach early in the morning. We ate our cereal and milk as we waited for the sunrise. Daddy loved to fish. He would say, ”The fish won’t catch me sleeping” or “I got to catch the high tide so I can catch the fish coming in.” He was the best father ever! We thought Daddy would be with us forever, or at least a while longer, but God had other plans for him.

On February 27, Daddy collapsed and was taken to the Lawnwood Medical Center where he died in the morning hours on the following day.
