Obituary For Nealy Mae Johnson Dunnings Britton

“To everything there is a season. A time or every purpose under heaven.”

-Ecclesiastes 3:1-

A TIME TO BE BORN: Ms. Nealy Mae Johnson Dunnings Britton was born in Shreveport, Louisiana to the late Mr. Alex Johnson Sr. and Mrs. Lottie Jackson Johnson, May 20 th , 1931. Nealy was the 5 th child of the seven Johnson Children.

AND A TIME TO DIE: Nealy passed on September 22nd, 2020 in Stuart Florida at approximately 6 p.m. Reared by God-fearing parents, the entire family was taught daily that ONLY WHAT YOU DO FOR CHIRST WILL LAST. If the doors of Avenue Baptist Church opened for services, the Johnson family was going to be there. Nealy joined the church at an early age and was baptized by the Reverend Henry “Doc” Allen. E

A TIME TO PLANT: She attended West Elementary, Central Junior High School, and Central Colored High School, where she graduated in 1949.

A TIME TO PLUCK WHAT IS PLANTED: During the fall of 1949, Nealy followed her 4 older siblings and entered in Southern University, Baton Rouge, La. She graduated with a Bachelor of Education in Music with authorization in vocal and band in 1954. She was a member of the Somoan Civic Club in Monroe, LA and an Eastern Star.

A TIME TO BREAK DOWN AND A TIME TO BUILD UP: After graduation she moved to Monroe, LA. She worked in the Monroe City School Systems to provide music education and share her love for creative arts in vocals, band, and orchestra. She inspired youth across Ouachita Parish and Monroe city. In addition to working with children in the school system and teaching piano in her home, she worked diligently in the New Tabernacle Baptist Church (Monroe, LA) and Jerusalem Baptist Church (Calhoun, LA) as a church musician, choir director, and Sunday School teacher. She inspired many students throughout her teaching career Nealy devoted herself to education, moral, development and aesthetic enrichment of her students. She was also a devoted wife and mother; married to the Late Harold Dunnings until his death in 1974 and to this union two children were born. In 1991 she married the late Robert Lee Britton until his death in 2006.

A TIME TO LAUGH “It’s always a good time for a party and Let the good times roll!!” Nealy loved to entertain, loved holidays, birthdays, baking and sewing. In her later years she loved traveling and trying her luck every now and then on the slot machine. Anyone who ever went with her, quickly found out that she was very lucky! She loved to laugh at Steve Harvey and always Kept up with the Kardashians. She also loved to have Talent Shows with her Great Grandchildren.

A TIME TO MOURN: Sorrow lifted its head many times in her life. In addition to her parents, her late husband Harold Wallace Dunnings, late husband Robert Lee Britton, two sisters and three brothers entered their final place of rest during her lifetime. The sisters were Alfirst Johnson Merrit, Jodie Mae Johnson, and her brothers were Alex Johnson, Otis Johnson, and Edward Johnson.

A TIME TO KEEP SILENT AND A TIME TO SPEAK Nealy was a loyal friend to many, an authoritarian to others, and passionate about the people and things she loved. She admonished both of her daughters and their children to always remain close and cherish time together.

A TIME TO LOVE Her legacy of education, close family bonds, perseverance and love is left to her sister; Bobbie J Bowie, her daughters Harolyn Dunnings Hall (John Hall) and Sophia Dunnings Solomon (Ron Solomon), grandchildren: Jessica Hall, Jasmine Hall, John Allen Hall II (Harolyn) Alex James, Daniel James, Loren James (Sophia), great grandchildren Taylor-Grace, Cole, Harper-Gabrielle (Jessica) nieces, nephews, their children, cousins and family, godchildren and close friends. The lives that Nealy touched are too vast to number.
