Obituary For Sara Roundtree-Fletcher

Sara Roundtree Fletcher, the seventh child of Cora and Willie Roundtree was born on September 8, 1923 in Jacksonville Florida. She received her early education in Duval County Public Schools. Upon completing her requirements and graduating from Stanton High School she attended South Carolina State University where she received a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education.

In 1948, after moving to Fort Pierce, Sara met and married Leo Fletcher. To this union one daughter, Cheryl was born. After her husband's untimely death, she continued to pursue her educational aspirations. She received her Masters Degree in Reading from Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, Fla. Further studies were done at Florida A&M University, Tallahassee, Fl.

Sara taught in the St. Lucie County School System for 32 years. She worked in the capacity of teacher and reading specialist impacting the lives of many young students. During her tenure she organized the first majorette and drill team in Fort Pierce, helped to organize and teach in the first Headstart Preschool Program under M.R Geiger and acted in the capacity of assistant girls basketball coach. Additionally, she taught Adult Basic Education at Indian River State College for 25 years.

She retired from teaching in 1980. However, retiring from teaching did not mean retiring from that which she loved, imparting knowledge into young minds. After a month’s hiatus she was drumming up other activities.She became an educational consultant for George W. Truitt Child Care Center, worked as a preschool teacher for Learning Tree Academy and eventually became the co-owner of the first 24- Hour childcare center in Fort Pierce, Wee Wuns Primary Preparatory and Developmental Learning Center. There she served in the capacity of Director and Educational Services Coordinator for youngsters birth to five.

Sara has been a member of the Neighborhood Police Advisory Committee, Indian River Investment Corporation serving on the board of directors and a member of Friends of Lawnwood Medical Center. Additionally, she was a member of Club Utilitas, Inc. , Retired Educators Association ,Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and a life member of the NAACP.

She was a devoted charter member of Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. She was a Deaconess, sang in the Adult Choir, worked on the Finance Committee, Usher Board and the Pulpit Aid Committee.

Sara was preceded in death by her father and mother, Willie and Cora Roundtree; husband,Leo Fletcher; sisters, Essie James and Betty "Lula" Roundtree; brothers, Ebbie "Shug" Roundtree, and Willie " Buddy" Roundtree; Sister-in-laws, Inez Roundtree and Gertrude "Gertie" Roundtree; brother-in-law J.Horace James.

She leaves to celebrate her life and legacy a loving and devoted daughter, Cheryl(Charlie) Suggs. Three sisters, Freddie L. Roundtree and Wilhelmena (Ed)Hamilton,Jacksonville Florida,and Florence Irvin,West Palm Beach Florida; brother,Thomas E Roundtree of Jacksonville Florida. One godson, Tony (Janese) Bradshaw, Ft. Lauderdale, Fl.; devoted daughters/friends Audrey Reese, Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Elizabeth Morrison,Fort Pierce, Florida; and a host of loving nieces ,nephews and friends who will miss her deeply.

A Visitation for Ms. Sara R. Fletcher will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at Stone Brothers Funeral Home from 3 -6 p.m.

A Homegoing Celebration will be held 12:30p.m. on Sunday, November 10, 2019 at Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. Jackie B. Edwards, Officiating. Entombment will take place in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens at 2 p.m. The Family request that live flowers & potted dishes be sent so that they can be kept by the family.
