Obituary For Sarah Mae Minnis

Sarah Mae Minnis was born on May 13, 1925 in Millen, GA to parents Sarah and Crawford Hurst. At the age of 3, her parents and siblings relocated to Savannah, GA where she attended Maple Street Elementary School, Cuyler Middle-High School, and Henry Street School. She came to Wabasso, FL to assist her sister Daisy in 1948, where she met and fell in love with William Minnis, Sr.

Sarah joined St. Matthew’s Missionary Baptist Church in 1949. William and Sarah married in front of God, family, and friends in Orlando, FL in 1951. They continued their life together working hard in the community. Soon after their son Billie was born, a few months later their daughter Yvonne would be welcomed into the world. Sarah served diligently and faithfully at St. Matthew’s Missionary Baptist Church. She was a founding builder. After the fire, she and others in the community helped rebuild the edifice. She also served as Clerk, President of the Pastor’s Aide Club, Secretary of the Women’s Home Mission Society, Choir Member, and Director of the Red Circle. Sarah worked at Indian River Memorial Hospital as well as other industries in the community for many years.

March 25, 2022, Sarah went home to be with her Father. She was preceded in death by her parents, Crawford and Sarah Hurst; spouse, William C. Minnis Sr.; brothers, Dannie Hurst, Johnnie Lee (Sarah) Hurst, Willie Hurst, James Hurst, and Crawford (Eva) Hurst; sisters, Annie Hurst, Mary (Rufus)Williams, Daisy Peal (Vellen) Henfield, and Mammie (Willie Albert) Kelly; son, William “Billie” Minnis Jr.; grandson, Lionel Wilbur Forbes Jr.; and a host of other family members. Left to cherish long lasting memories are her son, Franklyn McDonald Major Minnis of Nassau, Bahamas; daughter, Sarah Yvonne Minnis (Detelus) of Vero Beach, FL; grandson, Joisaint “Jo” (Christina Hill) Detelus of Pennsylvania; granddaughter, Ilana “Lana” Detelus of Vero Beach, FL; great grandsons, Jason and Christian Detelus of Pennsylvania; great granddaughter, Julia Detelus of Pennsylvania; godsons, Dan (Shirley) Aaron of Vero Beach, FL and Wilbert Mitchner of Houston, TX; goddaughters, Sherri Stewart of Orlando, FL and Lakendra Shatae Crawford of Sebastian, FL; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends that will miss her dearly.

Public visitation for Sarah Mae Minnis will take place by way of our drive-thru on Friday, April 8, 2022 from 5:00pm-7:00pm in the rear of Stone Brothers Funeral Chapel in Vero Beach, FL. A celebration of her life will convene on Saturday, April 9, 2022 at Saint Matthew's Missionary Baptist Church in Wabasso, FL beginning at 10:00am. Burial will immediately follow in Wabasso Cemetery.
