Winston Lloyd Howell was born on November 21, 1945 to Avis and Vibert Howell. He was the 5th of seven (7) children. As a young boy, he attended the Chetolah Park Primary School and later Kingston Senior School, now called Kingston High School.
After graduating from high school, he started working at the Central Sorting Office at age 19 and later joined the Jamaica Constabulary Force at age 21. After graduating from the Police Training School at Port Royal in 1966, he worked at numerous police stations across the Corporate Area starting with the Water Police in downtown Kingston. He served in the Force for 39 years before retiring in 2005 as an Inspector of Police at the Seaview Station.
He was affectionately called ‘JANGO’ by his colleagues and was a firm and disciplined man, but a just man. Winston had intuitive skills which served him well as a Police Officer. Before his retirement, he was honoured twice by the Jamaican Government for long service and distinguished service.
In 1969, he met Jean Irons and on May 05, 1973, they were married. Two children were born to that union, Andrew and Andryene. Later they adopted a daughter, Leonie, who was a delight and a welcome addition to our family.
Winston was a family man. He was a loving husband and a good and caring supporter of his family. His wife Jean, provided moral support and stood tall with him no matter what challenges faced the family. He gave his children the best education that he could afford. Although he only had a high school education, he ensured that his children graduated from tertiary institutions.
Winston lost his Dad while he was still a teenager and this unquestionably had a great influence on him and made him more determined to be a good father and he keenly watched over his family. His Uncle George Howell became the father figure in his life and played a pivotal role in his transition to manhood and becoming the responsible and disciplined person that he was.
During the years of political warfare among some communities in Kingston and the murder of persons, especially policemen, his family was often concerned about his safety. But in spite of his dangerous job, God took care of him.
Winston maintained a healthy relationship with his siblings –Gloria, Lena, Ossie, George, Trevor and Junior. All his nephews were favourites but he had a special connection with Carl, James, Floyd and his nieces.
He had an exceptional bond with his in-laws. There was always mutual respect between them and he was special to them. They saw and appreciated the ‘true person’ in him and that behind his serious and pragmatic exterior, he was a ‘Gentle Giant’ displaying warmth, kindness and empathy.
He had a great love for his mother, affectionately called Mammie. She was the matriarch of the Howell family with strong values and strengths, traits that she undoubtedly passed on to her son Winston.
Winston was also an entrepreneur and operated two businesses in Kingston. He was a very sociable person and would often get together with his friends for this purpose. He never forgot his roots in West Kingston. He would visit West Kingston almost daily even after his mother’s death in 1994.
In 2012, Winston had the crowning moment of his life when he gave away his daughter Andryene to Colvin Hunter and gained another son.
Winston and Jean migrated to the US to live with their daughter Andryene. They were enjoying their retirement years with their grandchildren and other family members. In August, 2019, Winston’s health started to decline but he responded well to treatment until September 2021 when he was hospitalized. He passed away on the morning of Sept 26, 2021.
While residing with Andryene and family, Winston started spending more time with his Creator, Redeemer and Friend, Jesus Christ. He attended church virtually with the family and also his in-laws. Together with wife, Jean and Andryene, Winston participated in a special group study of the Sabbath School lesson on Sabbaths and a Bible study and Prayer meeting on Wednesday nights. He always remembered his friends as he would be heard asking for prayers for friends who were ill and needed healing. Winston knew that we served a God who still works miracles.
Winston sleeps awaiting the call of the Life Giver and Saviour. Come ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you.
Those left to mourn his passing, his wife, Jean, children: Andrew, Andryene, Leonie, son-in-law, Colvin, grandchildren, Jade, Carson, Alaina, Peyton, Step grandchildren Conrad, Daquanne, Brandon, Sade, and Jada, nieces and nephews, cousins, in-laws and a host of relatives and wonderful friends.
