It is with deep heartfelt sadness; yet great spiritual joy that we announce our brother, Derrick S. Nelson, was awarded his wings to go “Home to Glory” on December 18, 2025, in Tampa, FL. Derrick was born unto the union of the late Horace Nelson and the late Lenora Williams Nelson on September 7, 1953. Derrick received Jesus Christ as his Savior at an early age at Jacob Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.
He graduated from Amos P. Godby High School. He worked at the Olin Plant in Woodville, FL, before moving to Tampa, FL. Later, he became a highly skilled roofer.
His memories and compassionate soul will be cherished by his sisters, Arrhea S. Williams, Tallahassee, FL; Kimberly C. Hobbs (Rev. Alvin) Atlanta, GA.; Brothers, Roderick O. Nelson and Megan M. Nelson, Tallahassee and Michael D. Nelson, Lake City, FL. Aunts, Henriette W. Gardner (Dr. Omega S.) Ora D. Johnson, and Anna L. Williams, Tallahassee; Uncle, John L. Williams, Sarasota, FL; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his maternal Grandmother, (Mother) Mary Elizabeth Williams and Aunt (Sister) Jo Ann W. Taylor who raised him after his mother went home to glory.
The Home-going Celebration will be Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at Anderson Chapel AME Church at 1307 Harlem Street, Tallahassee, FL, at 12 Noon. Strong & Jones Funeral Home, Inc. has been entrusted with the arrangements.
