Dr. Mabel J. Sherman, 89, was called to glory on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, in Tallahassee, FL surrounded by her family.
Dr. Sherman’s music career spans several decades and includes sharing knowledge at several schools in South Georgia and Northwest Florida, including Washington Middle School – Cairo, Ga; FAMU DRS (FAMU High); Astoria Park; Woodville Elementary School. The Astoria Park Elementary School song was composed by Dr. Mabel J. Sherman, Music Teacher at Astoria from 1986 to 1991. While at Astoria Park, Dr. Sherman expanded the music program to include a bell chorus, percussion ensemble and incorporated emerging synthesized music technology. Her name continues to evoke “remember when…” conversations from colleagues and former students. Her imprint on Astoria Park is permanently ingrained. For “…honor and dignity we strive…”
Her unique approach and steadfast determination propelled several students to local and national prominence (e.g., Miss Black America 1971). The FAMU High Glee Club was a local mainstay for several years as a preeminent high school chorus.
Dr. Sherman is a long-standing member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. She was known for playing and singing the national hymn at various sorority events throughout the years.
She leaves many brokenhearted, including her older sister, Lois of Valdosta, GA; two devoted sons, Eugene G. Sherman and Elwynn G. Sherman Sr.; 6 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
A private family ceremony will be held on Saturday.

I have such happy memories of Mabel when she and I were both elementary music teachers in Tallahassee. I remember her dedication and love of her students. She will be missed by many. Ginny Densmore
Gary and Greg. Thinking of you and your families. A remarkable, talented and devoted black woman - Dr. Mabel Sherman. She taught all of us at FAMU's elementary, middle and high school - spirituals, classical pieces and international songs. She loved her family and she loved us. My lifelong love of music started with her in elementary, when I sang in the Lucy Moten Glee Club she founded at FAMU. We will miss her and hold our memories of her forever in our hearts - grateful for all she gave. Wishing you peace and comfort on the loss of your precious mother. 💙🙏🏽

May The Lord continue to rest and receive Her Soul. Our prayers and sympathy to Her Family. So thankful for Dr Sherman's Servitude and Her Awesome Voice! We will always cherish Her version of the " Lord's Prayer" that she did at our Daughters' and Son in Laws' Wedding in Valdosta, Ga. The Henry Lee Everson PE & Families
For those of us who graduated FAMU High in the late 60's, Mabel Sherman was the signature of a core of outstanding teachers. She set high standards and was rigid in her insistence that we meet those standards. She saw talent in every student she taught. And she taught every student to appreciate the power and the importance of music in our lives. She is and will always be remembered with love and respect. Truly, she left us better than she found us. My condolences to her family.

My sincerest condolences to Eugene and Gary as well as her relatives and friends. Dr. Mable Sherman was my piano teacher during her time in Albany Georgia. She was the best piano teacher I ever had.

I remember when the family would come over to visit, she would always fix or have food available for us to eat while there. I enjoyed her company and glade that she was able to be apart of the wedding in Arkansas. Rommel & Moya Benjamin of the Little Benjamin family will miss her and wish Gary and Greg their families peace and strength during this sad time.
