Obituary For Essie Mae McGee

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mother Essie Mae McGee.

Mother Essie Mae McGee was born January 26, 1947 in Tallahassee, Florida to the late Willie Lee Shear and Ida Mae Jones.

Mother McGee passed peacefully Saturday, April 11, 2026.
Funeral service will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 18, 2026 at New Covenant Holy Temple, 4420 Shelfer Road. Burial will be 12:00 (Noon) Monday, April 20, 2026 at the Tallahassee National Cemetery.

Viewing will be from 12:00 (Noon) to 6:00 P.M. Friday, April 17, 2026 at Strong & Jones Funeral Home.

Mother McGee retired from Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. She was a faithful member of New Covenant Holy Temple where served as a church mother and in the serior chior. She was a member of the retired Divas Class of 1965 and the Red Hat Ladies.

Survivors include her husband, Gert McGee; six children, Marilyn Crumbie, Jacqueline (Alan) Moore, SchuRonda Lewis, Steve (Gayla) Cromartie, Angela Rolle and Marion Merryman; two sisters, Annie Brown and Patrica McKnight; 14 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, God son, Maurice (Chelsea) Pompey; Brother-in-law, Leonard Barnes Sr.; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by a son, Ossie Crumbie Jr.; two sisters, Melinda Calloway and Doretha Barnes.
